To change early or not to change...

Recently I purchased a car with just under 21,000 miles on it... 2007 model year. When the odometer hit 21,000 miles I changed the oil with Pennzoil Ultra 5w-20 and a motorcraft filter. The existing oil was VERY black, and it had a quickie lube filter on it, so I really had no way of knowing when the previous oil change was. Now, I'm almost up to 25,000 miles, and I like to pick even intervals to do my OCI's at (OCD ftl!) and I plan on doing 7,500 mile OCI's. Since I had no idea what kind of oil/crud may have been in there before, should I dump the Pennzoil Ultra early at 25,000 and then start my 7,500 mile OCI? Or should I stretch it out to 27,500 miles and then start? The engine is very young so I can't imagine very many, if any deposits at all developed, even in that super dirty oil that was in the motor when I bought it... but still...

The fact that your oil was black means nothing. if this was an older high mile vehicle, I would change oil now, but you have only 27K, so it will be clean, You can keep it in, and go with your normal OCI

I don't disagree but if it was mine I would go ahead and do the early change. If it was somewhat neglected before this may help to clean it up.

IMHO run it out to 7,500.. get your money's worth out of that oil.

The fact that it had a quicky lube filter means the oil has been changed at least once.. you're ahead of the game compared to some poor car's at that milage.

I agree. I'd leave it in.

plus 1, 7500 is good. u wont blow the engine, dont loose sleep, enjoy life.

If it was dino, I could see the reason to dump it. But, you have one of the best syns on the market (PU) in there, so let it stay in there and continue to do its job, which is strong cleaning.

Change it. It will give you peace of mind plus you'll be on an easy to remember mileage 25K 32.5K etc. I mean after all, what will it cost you to do the change, $30 or so?

This is a low mileage engine. Still if it was up to me I would change the oil. Especially if you are planning to keep the car for years to come. $30 is a cheap insurance.
