I'm in need of new tires for my Tahoe. Stock size is 265/70/17.

My local Discount Tire has the General Grabbers HTS in the stock size for $147 ea.

They also have Goodyear Silent Armor in a 255/75/17 for $137 ea. The Goodyears have a $40 rebate as well.

The two sizes are basically a wash. The 255 is about 1/2" taller and about 1/4" narrower. With 4.10s in the Tahoe, the slightly taller size won't affect driveability at all. Might even see a SLIGHT increase in mileage with the reduction of rpm with the Goodyears .

Both should have plenty of wet weather traction, with an edge in snow traction going to the Goodyears.

Thoughts?

I have the grabbers on my escape. So far i am pleased, they ride better than the crossterrains i had before. The are great in the rain, too new to judge wear.I run them at about 38psi front 35 rear.

I don't want or need a dedicated snow tire.

Why should I run the Firestones over the two I listed?

The General Grabber HTS is the #1 rated Highway All-Season tire per Consumer Reports. It is also ranked #3 in the survey results for TireRack in its category.

All the more reason to get the Goodyears.

Avoid the Goodyears. The Silent Armour series is one of their better offerings but in my experience GY's of all shapes and sizes leave a lot to be desired. They start out ok as a rule but every GY I have EVER HAD has worn out very fast. Once they start they become death traps as well( i.e. very slippery ). Just no use for that tire company's product at all.

The General Grabber HTS gets a lot of good reviews from folks. If these are your only two choices I would vote for the HTS. Decent price and a good performing tire( longevity is still up to debate )

Another tire to look into is the Firestone Destination LE. Absolutely AWESOME all season truck/SUV tires!. They wear like iron, give a smooth and quiet ride, and are great in bad weather. Price is on par usually with the HTS +/- a few bucks.

I am on set #3 and love them. I ran them in your exact size on my 07 Silverado, they came stock on my 08 Equinox, and I swapped to them on my 08 Ram( 20" size ). Those tires on the 07 Silverado performed as good as any AT I have ever run on a truck.

Very happy with them and highly recommend them for anyone with a truck or SUV that does not need or want to run AT's.

Didn't someone put a set of Grabber HTS tires on a truck, and then take them off within several days, as he was that unhappy with them?

I have Firestone Destination LE's on my Explorer. I wanted and a good performing SUV tire that will last. It's been doing everything well so far.

+3 on the Firestone LE tires. I have not had them in winter conditions yet, but they are a quiet, smooth riding tire that has a lot of grip on wet roads.

I guess it depends on how much of a highway type tire you want..

I always preferred a mildly aggressive AT style myself.

like the bridgestone dueler revos.(REALLY liked them)

or toyo open country AT's(nothing special but I liked them)

one of my coworkers had firestone LE's on his ranger. They seems very carlike tires , and he was very happy with them.

My experience with the Destination LE's has been poor - I only wish I could give them glowing reviews. 23,000+ miles and all 4 are down to 5-6/32 of tread on my '97 Explorer. Wearing evenly, just fast. Had over 60,000 on the original Wilderness AT and Goodyear RTS tires, so driving habits are not the issue either.

For what its worth as well, the county I work at no longer puts the LE's on vehicles either due to poor treadlife and traction complaints.

Others experiences are different, but there are certianly other reviews with different experiences.

Of the tires you mentioned, I'd take the Generals, hands down.

Do your research on Tire Rack and DT for other users of your tire/vehicle combination. Remember, you can change the tires out,for free, within 30 days at DT,so don't hesitate to do so. Keep up with the free 6,0000 rotations at DT and you will get a pro rata credit,if the tire wears out prior to the warranty. If all things are equal, between 2 choices, get the tire with the longer warranty. You will get more pro rata credit if the tires wear out early. I prefer my tires wear out early,so I can have fresher rubber on my car. Not much extra cost, net of the pro rated warranty credit. Hope this helps you,and others, maximize your tire buying $. Good luck with it, FZ1.

We have a fleet including Silverados with factory 265/70/17 size on them.

I have yet to find a better tire than my Michelin LTX M/S2. Cost about 16o bucks each. And per mile the cheapest tire I have ever bought.

I think we have discussed this before? It is a shame these tires have not done better for you. I can not explain why they have underperformed for you in such stark contrast to how they have performed for me and anybody I know who has used them. It is really odd? The traction complaint you talk of with county vehicles really has me shaking my head. These are hands down the best AS tires I have eve run in bad weather and I have run them in 3 sizes on 3 different vehicles to be able to say that. It is almost like your neck of the woods gets a different tire than everyone else.

On my current truck with the LE's( 08 Ram 4WD P275/60R20's )I have had them on for approx 15,500 miles. They have just begun to wear. 3 of the tires barely show any wear while the 4th tire shows 3/32 of wear( this tire had a leaky valve stem that was on backorder - special due to TPMS - and was constantly low until it got fixed which I think explains it ). If the wear holds consistent I will easily exceed the 60,000 mile tread wear rating except for that one tire which would basically equal it before needing to be replaced.

I have never had a tire last the way the LE's have for me. I am not calling you a liar. I just don't get it. How they can be so good for me and so poor for you is a real mystery.

Yep, we did talk about it before. I can't explain it either. I was hoping for a good tire based on the reviews I had seen at the time, but it just hasn't worked out. It isn't a firestone thing, I've had great sucess with them in the past, and nearly all our vehicles now get the Destination AT tires at work with excellent results (mostly F150's, with a sprinking of Explorers in the mix).

Maybe they do come off multiple lines and there are some better than others. I recall that was an issue back in the Wilderness AT recalls with one factory having a much higher failure rate due to a difference in the manufacturing process.

Not calling you a liar either - just wish mine were working out better...

+4 here, I'm on my second set with no complaints.
