Tire rotation pattern?

I would appreciate anyone's inputs on the tire rotation pattern for 4WD vehicle with a full size spare.

The general tendency for 4WD has been the cross pattern but this does not bring the full size spare into consideration.

I just looked at my owner's manual ..and it doesn't show a 5 tire rotation ...just the rears directly forward to the front and the fronts crossed to the rear. This is an 02 Jeep TJ. I also consulted my 99 FSM (also for the TJ)..and it also is void of a 5 tire rotation.

I believe, IIRC, that the spare is placed on the RR and the RF (that would normally go to the RR) goes to the spare. I imagine, however, that any "interception", or detour to the spare position, in the entire process would yield the same results on average ..as long as the tires "get in line" and are all serving at all stations "in order".

I just do front to back and vice versa. Don't rotate the spare, I use it when I put on a new pair of skins, that way I only have to buy 3. Lucky to get 25K out of OEM tires.

That's exactly what I do. I looked up some tire rotation information when I started with our LIberty and this is what I found.

Was the same for my 01' 4x4 F150.

Many 4x4 don't have a matching wheel on the spare tire unless you have the basic wheels. Any optional wheel usually does not include a matching spare.

My 2004 GMC has 17-inch wheels with P265/70R17 tires with a 16 inch spare and 265/75R16 tire.

Good point ..and it probably explains the "standard" 4 tire rotation rhetoric. Heck, even on my 92 Caravan ..the styled wheels are only on the ground. That spare, although the same size ...is a cheaper steel wheel.

Just an FWI. If you cross only two tires, there are alot of contradictions on which way to do it. It really doesn't matter as long as you do it the same way every time. I always rotatr front to back unless there is uneven tire wear between sides.
