It might come down to what you really need in terms of service. Total costs mean considerably more to me if I get a overly opinionated ***hole rep on the phone who doesn't adequately answer my question AND be expected to pay $50 dollars more for the same thing due to freight. It's easy to say that there's no free lunch but if the negatives outweigh the positives, then service might be more of a red herring than anything else.
You might have to search for it but there are other tire sites that have specs/reviews of tires other than TR. I generally don't think anything about TRs consumer reviews and take their tests with a grain of salt as most of their tests use BMWs as the mules. "Your mileage may vary" considerably on that front alone...which has been my experience.
Tirereviewsandmore.com is Discount Tires review site...and while the information is fairly general, you can derive certain things from it that I don't get from TR...and I'm definitely not a "fanboy" pimping DTD over TR. IMO, service is meaningless if your questions have already been answered elsewhere and they don't provide anything different from other vendors for your particular needs. Kind of like a full service brokerage house charging you a 5% commission for doing nothing than setting up your account.
