Tire plugs or patch?

I seen "plugs" which are nothing more than sticky rubber like rope OR plugs that have one end that has an umbrella flared type end. The plug with the flared end is pushed into the hole far enough to allow the flared end to expand and the pulled taut. I haven't seen the flared type for some time now but, I think it would be much safer that the rope type fix. Ed

Never had a plug fail. Even double plugged a large hole in motorcycle tire and drove home slowly and kept stopping to check on it. Had to drive it back to work to get it repaired though about 25 miles away. I have had patches make tire no longer balanceable which basically ruins it. I think patches were lobbied for as a means to make money on repairs as self patches are alot less likely. Plugs can be fairly easily done by most anyone with correct tools no dismount and remount then rebalance required.
