Tire dilema

I need your help BITOGer's. Just put 4 new Good Year Triple Treads on an 05 Accord Coupe. Tires are great. I just had the car aligned this afternoon as I should have had this done when the put the new tires on yesterday.

At high speed I'm getting a very slight vibration from the steering wheel. I had them re-balance the front tires. Still doing it. What could it be? Is it possible they forgot to balance them?

Rotate the fronts to the rear, and the rears to the front.

If it still vibrates, then it is something other than the tires and wheels causing the shakes. If the vibration goes away after the move, then there's something up with one of the tires/wheels.

When you say 'high speed'.....just how fast (MPH) are you going ?

70, 80, 90 MPH ?

Those are fairly heavy tires, at least, compared to others. I hope you don't have an uneven weight distribution that isn't easily fixable with re-balancing....a problem the heavier tires sometimes seem to have.

If there's a out-of-round problem, it's usually also(often very faintly) noticeable at 15-30mph also. Get on some freshly laid intown asphalt,even a nice smooth parking lot,as long as 30mph won't get you in trouble) and pay attention for wiggle, shimmy, wobble type sensations.

Call tire source and speak with service writer or manager to document there's a problem. Then if they're agreeable try to put at least 1,000 miles on tires before having them rebalanced to make sure they're fully seated to rims.

Well, if it is a continued problem that doesn't rectify itself (you COULD just have a tire with a storage-flat-spot kind of thing going on), they should be under warranty. It's a pain to fool with, but, it's a bigger pain to put up with a weeble-wobbly tire.

Buster, I've read many reviews of this tire and the vibration/balancing problems you describe is not uncommon. If they can't fix it, I'd see if the shop is willing to trade them in for something else. I know discount tire will usually do this. See if they have General Altimax RTs or Toyo Versado LXs. The Generals recently finished first in a Tire Rack comparo and the Toyos got phenomenal user reviews on 1010 tires. Both are much lighter than the Triple Threads.

Thanks VeeDubb, you might be on to something. I'm going back to NTB tomorrow. I spoke with someone there today and they are busy but they want me to come in tomorrow to rebalance them. Manager will be there too. They have a sign up in the waiting room that says within 30 days they will exchange them if you are not happy with them. Might move to a lighter tire.

Buster make sure you check the torque of the lug nuts too. I am sure they did but just in case. Too tight and you got problems.

The tripletread tires seem to have an aggressive tread design and are directional tires, which may affect feeling in steering wheel. I have noticed a slight vibration in my accord when have car at 75-78 mph, but do not feel it the same at a lower or higher speed. One mechanic told me it was the resonance in the four cylinder engine. It is very slight and am used to it, and the wheel does not shake at all, but do notice it at around those particular speeds. I noticed a similar vibration feel when test driving the 2004 Toyota Camry when was looking at cars before. I still would recommend Michelin Primacy All Season Tires for your car. They will give you a wonderful ride, good fuel economy and handling. They are a brand new tire, and they would be worth the extra cost, which is minimal in the sense that you will have them on the car for at least 50k miles. Look at the test data on tirerack for them.

Another thing to check is the wheel to hub mounting surface...I just went through this looking for a "bent" rim...turned out to have a defect on the rim from improper installation at some point...this was causing the wheel to act bent on the car, but straight on the balancer.

I don't believe you said if this was a pre-existing condition or not?

I have two sets of BFG Traction TAs, I highly recommend them and I know NTB can get them.

I'm looking only for 2 rims, but would take all 4 if you were not interested in 2 spares. BUT, you could take the darn tires for yourself for like $100. I think 6 rims makes it really easy to keep 2 nice all-seasons for winter, while not burning them up on hot summer pavement. You're probally not interested, but I might do it and sell the tires anyway. I have my Eagle Response Edge I want to mount up and use, but still have some 1/2 worn Exclaims to use up.

Meh, the tires look a bit wilted. I dunno if I want to go $500 for the set, but 2 rims alone would cost $270.

Lug nugs were waaayyy over torqued. They had the tires inflated at 30 psi front and back. Bumped that up to 35 lbs for all four tires.

Wet traction was tested today in the rain and was excellent. Best wet traction tire I've ever had. They are a heavy tire, @ 25lbs, but it's not that noticeable, so far. One of the Michelin tires i passed on were 24 lbs.

I had my fiance feel the steering wheel and she didn't feel anything. Said it ever so slightly vibrates but it's not a shacking type feel. It could be just from the aggressive tread of this tire.

Some tire manufacturers will mark the high, and or low spot on the tire. It helps the tech when there are out of round problems. Not all rims are true. A dial indicator will help check that. Once in a while when you get these kind of issues, a tech or dealer will just put the tire in the rear where you might not feel it. When you rotate the tires, there's the problem again. I would try and get the issue resolved.

Problem fixed. The rebalanced all 4 tires. No vibration at all. I don't think the rebalanced the rear the first time and that was the problem.
