Guess it depends on the engine, but what is your favorite way of keeping the crankshaft from turning when torquing the front pulley bolt? Especially an auto trans vehicle?

No doubt. But what if you need a specific torque setting? They can range widely from engine to engine; plus you might not have enough room for the ol` impact!

wrap pully with an old belt to protect it and then wrap a chain wrench around it, wedged against an unmovable object{frame of car or other sturdy object in the srea} then use a torque wrench to tighten to specs{ I had to tighten mine to 270ft/lb this way-easy}

I have seen an old timer "make" a strap wrench using a length of old serpentine belt, and use that to hold the pulley while he tightened the crank bolt.

The only pulley bolt I've tightened had cut-outs on the pulley that I could stick a pry-bar through and under the block, locking the pulley in place.

I'd be surprised if any shop, including dealers, take those bolts on and off with anything other then an impact.
