What would be a good method for cleaning and lubricating the throttle cables, and the moving parts around the throttle body assembly? The spring-loaded mechanism at the throttle body is a little grimy and needs some care.

Cable luber? Interesting, I'll look that up.

My problem is that 95% of the cable runs inside a separate tube from the hand grip down to the throttle body. The cable itself never really sees the light of day since it is mostly contained by that protective housing. The only exposed section of cable is right at the throttle body where it connects to the spring-loaded armature. That spring and barrel unit is what needs cleaning and lubrication. Not the throttle plates. Not the intake chamber.

So what I'm trying to get at here is what product should I use to clean off the road dirt on those external parts? Is carb cleaner safe? Also, what should I use to lube all that stuff once it's cleaned off? WD40 is not gonna cut it.

Contact cleaner, then a light spray with cable lube. My latest favorite is M1 synthetic spray, but any quality cable lube would be fine. The cable luber attaches by clamping to the outer sheath. Disassemble the throttle tube and free the cable. A spray of WD40 first, followed by cable lube and your throttle will be like new smooth. A small drop of silicone based grease on the throttle tube where the ball goes in, and a dab inside the housing run halves before you screw the assembly back together. Do the clutch cable and pivot while your there. You may be surprised at how different things feel. Remember.. chain lube is not cable lube. Chain lube gets sticky after the carrier evaporates, and makes the controls gummy instead of smooth. Just my .02 after wrenching for several amature MX riders and my own street bikes.
