Thrift stores getting new items?

I was just randomly in front of a Goodwill store and thought I'd have a look. Found two items that I actually liked and bought for $7 each (and no sales tax). They had no attached manufacturer's tag, but did have the Goodwill price tag. They also had marks on the care label that look like they were from a laundry marker. And there were a lot of items from this same brand (Go Barefoot, a maker of Hawaiian style shirts). I suspect they were donated new as they had that new clothing smell. Not sure why they would need to mark the care label. But their new items have an MSRP of about $100, so even with a defaced care label I though $7 was a good deal.

I have seen care labels that were marked so that they weren't considered warranty items. Especially with The North Face, where their outlet stores were well known for selling items that aren't covered by their warranty. They'll take a laundry marker to fill in the O on the care label, although I've had some of these where the marker faded. I've also bought stuff from one of their "sample sales" where they sell items that were sales samples that their sales people would show to buyers at retailers. They were labelled as "medium" but the actual size could be pretty different than a typical medium. Those care labels would be marked, but would also have something like a number marked.

I bought some pretty nice clothing at an off-price store that were marked on the care label. Those came with normal manufacturer's tags and didn't appear to have any defects.

These stores could be a magic bullet. As items from China potentially become scarce3. And even so they reduce our trade deficit and provide employment. I am downsizing in prep to move. I have given tons of GOOD stuff to Goodwill!! I actually shop there.

The items I bought had made in USA labels. There's maybe a smidge of controversy over whether or not these can be considered true "Aloha shirts" as they're sewn in the mainland US. But I've got a bunch from Hawaiian brands (like Reyn Spooner) that are sewn in Asia (China, Malaysia, South Korea). But they typically use imported fabrics, where I believe they still use a lot of fabric from Japan.

Who is "they"?

I'm thinking the manufacturer or perhaps a regular retailer. I haven't found a place that takes returns without a receipt in years. I do remember returning some AC filters (car was traded in) I bought at Target but where I lost the receipt. They gave me store credit for the current shelf price.

You will see new with tags items in thrift stores and they can be a good buy.
Ever wonder what happens to the items left over from a clearance sale when the retailer wants to clear the space?
They often get donated. It helps if you wear a size that is at one extreme or the other, since these are the items most likely to be left over and donated.

I love my one and only Reyn Spooner shirt. It's the "Elvis in Hawaii" shirt. My wife hates it!

I don't have anything that's really all that tacky other than one that has images of fictional Hawaiian records. I would also never pay full retail for any of them. They all came from closeout stores, thrift stores, or bought via eBay. And sometimes I ended up finding something in XL that I liked, but looks like I'm wearing "The Big Suit" that David Byrne wore in Stop Making Sense.

Cheap Hawaiian shirts from a premium brand? Sign me up! Time to visit Goodwill. I have been looking for a high end cassette player, would be nice to get a Nakamichi Dragon for $35 😃

Unfortunately the cost of repairing/maintaining one would probably be more than $35.

I don't recall ever paying more than $30 for a shirt. I only spent that much because I really liked one particular shirt. Most I bought at off-price stores like Ross or Marshall's. Typical prices were $9.99 to $14.99. Full retail might be about $65 to $100, although I'm wondering who really pays full price. I've heard that off-price stores in Hawaii have their own sections with lots of the big brand names.

This is it. Does make me look about 20 lbs heavier when I wear it, but maybe that will make people less likely to mess with me. Not bad for $6.99 all inclusive.

This is the problem with cassette players.

Any decent unit you can source needs to be throughly cleaned, lubed, and belts replaced.

Apparently cassette tech peaked in the 90s and what you can buy new now is inferior, even from top brands, if any sell them as they are all using the same heads and mechanisms.

I'm not even sure where to source cassette tapes other than new old stock. As far as I can tell Maxell is out of the market. I guess there's TDK (bought Imation?) but they only have Type I. Not even sure where one could get Type II or metal.

EBay has a lot of NOS including the rare metal cassette tapes with the vintage reel to reel look.

I would just like to get one to listen to my old mix tapes for nostalgic reasons. It’s not high up on my priority list of expenditures though.
