Pennington County, South Dakota 1936

A mother holds her child in front of their home during the height of, "The Great Depression," & "The Dust Bowl." Given how bad things were, this home was better than some of the others that people across South Dakota & the U.S. had to live in. The summer of 1936 was one of the hottest and driest ever recorded.

But it's a guarantee that the home didn't have air conditioning or even a fan, running water, an indoor bathroom or electricity.
I believe that this picture is a perfect example of why with today's comforts we should be more grateful than ever for what we have. The home was VERY simple & modest, yet while holding her child the mother still felt she had a reason to smile.

Not burdened with the entrapments of modern life.

I was driving home after going dog paddling when I noticed sundogs. I pulled over at a beach parking area and took this picture of two sundogs. As is always the case with pictures of sundogs, a circular area off about 22° from the center of the sun appears darker than the surrounding sky. Sundogs form due to ice crystals in the atmosphere and refraction. I wish I had brought my good camera but I use it mostly while on vacation. All I have is a cellphone snap.

The sundogs are the two bright slightly rainbow-colored spots at 9 and 3 o'clock that appear equidistant from the sun.
