Thoughts on oil filter replace each or every other time?

Every other time is probably fine with a good filter. It's not for me though. I've already got my heavy jack out of the shed which is the hardest part of the oil change. Even the higher priced filters are not that expensive when you consider the savings of the DIY oil change.

I have adopted the same policy. No more hot engine parts near the oil filter contacting my hands or arms and no more hot filters and hot contents to unscrew.

I really don't know why it took me four decades to switch to this routine of separate oil and filter changes.

Great !! somebody else doing off-set oil & filter changes.

I find a cold filter much easier to change, no burns, no mess and they don't seem to get stuck anymore. My car is high enough that I don't need to jack it up, so it's: slide under, unscrew old, check / clean surface, screw on new. Job done in just a few minutes.

The hot oil dump & fill on another day is almost as quick.

It's a couple more times a year grabbing the floor jack and crawling under the two vehicles. But no big deal. I park my rides in the back yard anyways. Insurance companies that are made aware of that, give discounts on insurance premiums, for not leaving them in front yards, or on the street.

Decreased odds of either being hit while parked, or vandalized - or stolen.

If Im using an expensive filter like a Fram Ultra or Purolator Synthetic ill use it twice. Ive cut them open and they looked perfect after over 10000 miles.

I took a cellulose Mann past 17k on an e39, and it looked just fine coming out. Don't think you have anything to worry about.

I definitely won't worry now, as there was a sale on Fram Ultras at Part Source so I grabbed one tonight for her car and I'll be putting it on there tomorrow morning (might as well do it with a cold engine)

Since her BMW uses a cartridge filter and changing it is done from up top, I don't even need to be doing it at the same time as I'm doing an oil change. So instead of changing it every other oil change moving forward (and doing it on a hot engine) I will just change it by mileage from now on. Fram rates these as being able to go 32,000 km (and I'm sure that's a conservative rating) so I will keep it simple and do it every 30,000 km. Her car is at just over 170,000 km now so it's perfect timing, then the next change will be right at 200,000, then 230,000, and so on.

One interesting thing I did notice after looking at this Ultra (XG10075), the media is not red like on other versions (it's white) and I don't see any wire backing on it either.

Well, thanks to all who posted, I just serviced a 2015 Sentra and did not swap out the Fram Ultra from last service.
I feel like some kinda heinous criminal...

All good!

I'm on round 3 with the Ultra on my Jeep. Very easy to change the oil, but not the filter.. 4.5 quarts gets you close.

My truck on the other hand is a total disaster. I've reused the filter a few times and overshot the runway each time...

Considering I drive my truck more, I should be doing things the other way around.

That's weird. The XG10075 has been wire backed with same looking media as other XGs. However, that application is one of the FU cartridge anecdotes (linked below) posted here with issues, ie., separation of endcaps from the media especially on BMW. Your observation makes me wonder if Fram has changed the XG design completely because of the anecdotal issues. The other option being, someone swapped out the XG with a TG or EG.

As for topic, I've run a BD+ with synthetic blwnd media two ocis to 13.5k miles, and a XG3614 two oci to 14k miles, both looked good in dissections. Full synthetic media better suited to every other oci and/or extended ocis.

The Ultra box was still sealed shut, so nobody swapped it out and you can tell it's not a TG or EG because the media is still synthetic.

Then as noted it seems a change has been made in the XG 10075 from the previous XG construction. First I've heard mention of a non wire backed XG/Ultra. It does lead me to wonder what, if anything, supports the synthetic media. I'd check it out next time I'm in Walmart, but I'm not much on breaking the seal unless I intend to buy the filter.

What I've noticed that it seems that some of the brand name cartridge oil filters are actually sourced from a different manufacture than their own canister oil filters. This is probably because for them there is not a large enough demand to produce them themselves. I'm sure they meet the manufacture's specifications but maybe just not the exact same materials. Did you notice if the country of origin was listed on the filter or the box?

I actually did notice that on the cartridge itself it said that it was made in Korea!
