Now there's obviously no contest vs your own homemade BBQ using organic meats and time honed secret recipes, but I've been to Dickeys a few times now and was wondering what others thought:

- You'll never go again
- Its ok in a pinch
- You go quite often
- You wish you could go every day

My own take is its ok occasionally. The waffle fries are usually very good and the spicy bbq sauce for my taste is up there with what I might make myself. The meats vary. The chicken last time had good flavor, the turkey was not good but the time before was. Sausages are consistently ok, ribs inconsistent. Brisket last time was enjoyed by all but not so much previously.

What are your thoughts?

My sister and BIL like the one in Springfield, MO. I ate at the one in Fort Collins, CO late last week. We were there late, so it is hard to judge how strong their business is.

Think the food is OK. Ribs were a bit dry (compared to what I am used to at several locations in KC) and the brisket was a little dry also. Sauce was OK. Beans were mostly OK.

Will go back again, but it wont be a consistent favorite. This one allows discounted drinks if you return with their plastic drink cups. Did appreciate the free soft serve cone at the end.

It's okay in a pinch.

The one on Dalworth St in Grand Prairie is a little better than most, but it is also a little scary. It's probably been there for 40 years and it shows.

I don't really patronize chain BBQ places too much. David's is in the Pantego suburb of Arlington (Pantego is an old Hekawi Indian word for "speed trap") It's part of the Sonny Bryan's family and the brisket is far superior to Dickey's. It's in a strip mall but it is cleaner than the Dalworth Dickeys's.

Or Smokey's in Fort Worth. In a converted Dairy Queen. Little less of a smoke ring than David's. OMGosh I can't believe that brisket can be this tender.

Bodacious in Arlington,YUM!!!!!!!!!!!

Its ok in a pinch. But to be fair I have only ate there once when I was driving around town one night, was hungry and spotted it and had never heard of it before.

Are you talking the one in DFW or a real one?

It's ok for BBQ. It feeds the craving and the sides are ok. Free ice cream is nice.

Best ribs I've had are at the Twin Kiss restaurant on 301S in La Plata, MD or so.

Plenty of other spots worth mentioning but since I just enjoyed those ribs last night, they were worth mentioning.

Actually now I'm hungry. Go try the BBQ Stew (Brunswick stew) at Prices BBQ house in Auburn, AL. Sweet Lucy's is good in the Philly area.

I like a good spicy molasses-based BBQ sauce...

In a pinch...

Famous Daves is much better for chain stuff although I wonder where Dave gets the idea that we CHOP pork in GA...

For real BBQ try the wooden shack with the barrel grill sticking out the side on GA 34 just north of Franklin... don't ask for CHOPPED pork...

In Texas, I think BBQ is only measured in varying degrees of good. Dickey's is fine. Spring Creek is fine, Sonny Bryan's is fine. It's not hard to find good BBQ, but it is exceptionally hard to find great BBQ. The best I have had was from backyard smokers. The quality from that is highly variable.

If you slow smoke a brisket or pork shoulder it's tough to have a bad result.

See, you guys down south have it good. The further you go north, the more scarce BBQ becomes. I hear that Canadians don't even know what BBQ is.

So, here in the Detroit area, there are a few choice BBQ places and a few chains. If you just want to drop in for lunch and stuff your face with pulled pork or some brisket, Dickey's is just fine. It's not stellar, but it's passable and, frankly, I think it's worlds better than some of the local mom and pop places people rave about.

Of course, it may just be that there is a Dickey's close to work, they're never busy at 11:00 AM, and their Thursday lunch special is a pretty good value. You take what you can get.

It's ok in a pinch. Living in Texas, I'm spoiled, though. There are plenty of run down shacks pushing out quality 'que.

If one truly loves bbq, a pilgrimage to Franklin BBQ, the mecca of all bbq, is in order.
