Has anyone used Amsoil HD Metal Protector as an undercoat for vehicles during the winter? LegitStreetCars YT used it to coat a few vehicles and it doesn’t leave an oily mess that attracts dirt (it appears), but more of a wax. Living in the rust belt I’m thinking about added protection against rust and just researching at this point.

So you think oil will attract dirt but a fluid wax won’t ? What does it matter that the oil will attract dirt? It does not affect how it protects.

I use NH oil on my truck. This is the first winter I’ve used it (new to me Truck). So far no complaints

The spray dries to a wax like substance which is hard and doesn’t appear to come off with wiping. That’s why I assumed it wouldn’t attract dirt.

What is NH oil?

Not sure how easy it would be to clean off for maintenance and I’m a bit OCD.

Thanks for the link.

Just wear some old clothes that you don’t mind getting oily. This would come off with a pressure washer.

It is, it won’t drip in your face either if that’s what your thinking. I’ve only noticed it drip very slightly when the truck is parked indoors under heaters . Zero drips outside when it’s cold.

I also put on a thick layer..this is what it would look like.

Amsoil metal protector works pretty good but you need a good clean surface for it. It would be good for a new vehicle but I wouldn't use it for a vehicle that has any rust starting.

Ive used Amsoil metal protector to protect the chrome parts on my trucks during the winter. It works good and in the spring I just clean it off.

Looks good in all black, when you mentioned parking in a heated area what temp would you guess it dripped at? My garage is heated to 50 but I can turn that down.

Great to know, cars are newish but have already been through a few winters.

Temp is set for probably 65-70* and that was directly under a big infra red heater (shop/work). It should not drip at 50*

Its a wax (parafin??) suspended in a solvent carrier. Works reasonably well but not ideal. On my 2011 I started to see some very minor rust on sheet metal edges after the first winter which was fully arrested subsequent years by switching to fluid film. Our 2018 seems to be doing well on the steel frame with the amsoil HDMP but, of course, its still fairly new.

HDMP does hold up pretty well to weathering and car washes. Interesting, when camping this past summer it was exposed to some muddy dirt roads which seemed to become embedded in the HDMP and wouldnt wash off. Not sure whats up with that as it definitely dries to a semi-hard but solid waxy film.

I've used it in localized areas underneath a few cars, and even spraying over rust it visibly slowed it down for at least 3-4 months. Expensive, but good stuff.

Haven’t used it myself yet, but the way it looked it reminded me of Cosmoline mixed with solvent and left to dry... used to do that a ton at my old job to protect metal parts from rust.

Looked up the SDS... according to that it contains: C13-14 isoparaffin, Naptha, and Distillates (petroleum), hydrotreated heavy naphthenic

I used it, it was OK. I prefer to use a product that I can use in my rustproofing gun and airless sprayer. IMO applying it with those tools vs. a spray bomb yields a much better job.
