Thoughts on 07 Altima 2.5s w/ CVT???

I've always liked the Altima, and the CVT seems like an excellent gearbox for casual driving. Not sure what kind of warranty Nissan is offering at this point, though.

Same here, I've always liked the Altima. I've owned 2 Sentras and they served us well. Jatco makes a good trans and it looks as though Chrysler uses Jatco's CVTs now too. More on the road is always a good thing. http://www.jatco.co.jp/ENGLISH/PRODUCTS/cvt.html I'd definately look into the Altima if I was in the market.

Would you be hesitant to purchase one if you put on more than 40K per year?

I'm not sure that would sway me. I havent seen any data to support that this drivetrain's lifespan is less than any other.

At the end of the day I think the CVT transmissions will prove to be considerably more reliable than traditional automatics; but I am not sure if they are there yet. I would not hesitate to buy one if that is what suited me, but I'd personally still choose a manual, given the option.

That said, I currently drive an automatic.

CVT's when used in other drivetrains (Saturn for example) did not fare well at all. In fact, they quit using them due to failures at a very young age. I love the car, the fuel mileage and I'm fine with the HP output of the 2.5L but since I put about 40K miles on per year, I'm hesitant. I may wait until I see more higher mileage altimas with the CVT. But, dam I love the new Altimas!

The Toyota CVT units seem to be holding up very, very well. I can't say the same about the early Honda CVTs or the short lived GM CVT trans.

Don't fear the CVT. Nissan USA has committed to the CVT.
Simply maintain the CVT with reasonable drain/refills intervals and enjoy that car.
Almost all of the issues were worked out with the Murano before they installed CVT into the Maxima/Altima.
Do fear and avoid any dealer that says fluid doesn't need changing.
With 40k a year driving, you'll want to and should consider changing the fluid every 9 months; ~6 quarts @ $15 each, dealer only sourced fluid.

Hopefully they have ironed out the problems with the 2.5L by now. I had an 02 SE-R with that engine and it had all kinds of troubles. Engine was known for problems, recalls and burned a lot of oil. It actually had problems with loose screws on the intake butterflies that would fall out and get sucked into the engine.
