Lets say you decide to run a dual remote filter setup. Would you run 2:

1) Of the same filters?
2) One type one brand, one type another brand?
3) If #2, how would you arrange the setup of them, which first/second?
4) Filter size: larger or smaller than normal given you have the space?
5) How long would you run YOUR setup before changes?
6) Would you change one filter before the other and run second filter longer?

My understanding of a dual remote filter is that one of them syphons off a very small portion of the oil at a time (10%) and subjects it to very fine filtration. Thus one filter is unique and of fine filtering media the other is your normal full flow spin on. That is why they are called bypass, not all oil flows through it.

There are both kinds. Dual remote with equal flow (e.g. permacool), and where one is valved for bypass (e.g. Amsoil).

Assuming we're talking about something with equal flow between filters then I doubt differences in strategy would be measurable. Two new filters will have benefits new, and one new/one old filter will have benefits elsewhere in the curve. What you're buying with two full-flow filters is doubling flow rate (eliminating bypass), better cooling, more capacity, and possibly longer service intervals.

Comparing brands quickly leads me to question spending too many brain cells and $75-100 when a real bypass setup is much more effective at removing contaminants for just a little more.

I would run the same type and brand of filter, as I would believe if the 2 would have different flow characterics, one would work harder?

I would run the largest filters that would fit.

I would change one filter at six months the other at once a year, unless the analysis said to do differently. I would run a quality oil, and change it according to analysis.

I have the dual (equal) filter mount (not the bypass type) - I would not consider two brands on this mount.

I change both filters at the same time. I really like this set-up. Does anyone here know the pain of changing an oil filter in the stock location on a B21Fti Volvo? Impossible is an understatement. With a lift, it becomes barely manageable. Remote is a must.

It seems like if you used two different brands of OF's the oil would take the path of least resistance (well I guess it always would!)....

Using two filters that don't clean oil isn't much better than using one filter that doesn't clean oil. One of those filters needs to clean oil. The other one needs to filter fast. There is nothing wrong with using two full flow filters with a filter that cleans oil. I have a Detroit engine at work set up that way. I talked to PermaCool about a sandwich adapter for a Dodge Cummins. They came up with a dual remote system that I could use with my Motor Guard submicronic bypass M-30's. It was a standard filter re location kit by PermaCool that used a big GM or Ford filter. The PermaCool sandwich adapter was then used to divert oil to the M-30 single or double or more filters to be cleaned. Why couldn't I use a System 1 full flow filter from www.jegs.com to protect the engine from large engine damaging abrasives and the Motor Guard 0.01 micron filter to keep the engine and System 1 filter clean? All I would need to do is check the System 1 for leaks when I change the Motor Guard. I ordinarily change the pleated paper filters every 2 years. There are a lot of choices. PermaCool doesn't make sandwich adapters for the Dodge Cummins.
The stock mount and full flow filter would make more sense to me. If I buy 2000 adapters they will run me off some. Cummins uses a 1" - 16 thread - not exactly common. I'm looking at a full flow filter in the catalog here. It claims to be a super oil filter. It claims 90% efficiency at 20 to 40 microns. That would be laughable to someone that understands filters.

Tell that guy to go sit in the lobby during "Ladies Day" and see how the shop tries to sell new air filters, wiper blades, and other junk.

– one time in my life after midwinter hernia surgery (prior to being a synthetic fool) I had to get the oil changed in my car so I went to the FunkyMunkey – this was a turbo and I somehow knew it wasn’t good to go too long with ordinary petroleum oil in a turbo – anyhow the Lubemonkey (dollar junky) says… “…there was no oil in your engine…we removed the drain plug and no oil came out…that car right there”. Boy I must have looked pretty stupid that day (other than walking funny)….because: a) I watched them drain the oil and b) I checked the quantity and appearance right before driving there….needless to say I said; “put a filter and oil in the car and here’s your $19.95”….still don’t know where the guy was going with that line.

As for my dual filter set up – I did it for two reasons: 1) Physical access and 2) increase in oil volume. Not micro-filtration. The car has 234,000 miles on it. It was an inexpensive, and easy install. Changing filters is a snap. I can use two FL-1A’s from Walmart or two SDF-15’s at my cost.

I sell Amsoil dual remote filters with one a bypass. Good idea for certain cars. I go the Amsoil recommended 10,000 mile intervals on my turbo. I’m not 100% certain any bypass filter will buy me much in longevity when my oil analysis looks so good.
