It's not that crazy to want an old work outlet - say in the center or specific location on a short counter, for example. This is a light switch, maybe perfectly placed.

But I would have built a braced box! Less cutting!!

PS Stud finders SUCK. Use a stack of strong neodymium magnets. Much better.

I wonder if it was leftover cutoffs, and zero cutting was done for this--literally picking up scraps to make it work. Way too many construction screws though.
 
I guess the electrician was not familiar with a $4 old work box!

You might be surprised what any tradesman will do when they don't have something on hand. Maybe not!

Looks like they had plenty of drywall work going already, I suppose.

PS I have stacked 2 more than once. Never 3+ though!! Hahahhahahaa
