I think for most cars out there, in average conditions todays dino oils are ok as long as you stick to the proper intervals. But for poeple like me with high revving, high performance engines, synthetics have their benefits. I also do track racing.. Regular cars could probably extend their drain intervals on synth to 6 or 10K miles so the cost would still be the same over dino.

My dads Buick Regal with the 2.8L V6 had about 400,000km on it in 10 yrs. Regular oil changes since day one with either Quaker State or Castrol 5w30. GM oil filters mostly with maybe Frams too.. Engine still ran strong when he sold the car. If I knew more about oils back then, I would have recommended to him 15w40 in the summer since he did tow a boat with the car but the engine survived anyway.

As best I can remember, the Buick engine was cooled by a liquid coolant, so in either hot or cold weather the engine would be kept at whatever temperature the thermostat in the cooling system was designed to keep it. I've run 5W-20 in every car I've ever owned since 1964 regardless of what part of the country or what season of the year it happens to be.

2004 Acura 3.5RL. Has 222K miles on the clock. Many different oils were used over her lifetime, but sticking to Redline 5W30 now. Dad mostly did OCIs according to the light (7500 miles), but missed O.C. at around 140K miles. Went to 5-6000 mile intervals since 195K.

May 2023: Think it had about 218K at the time.

2002 Ford Explorer (V6 Engine) - former Police Inceptor - so it probably got proper service till they sold it.
I got it with 150000ish miles, and did only one oil/filter change back than. Since more than 100000 miles, I just top of the oil from time to time - no filter change. Cheapest dino oil I can find at the supermarket.

I have to deal with rust and electronic problems, but the engine runs fine.
I don't do short drives, and it doesn't ever see more than 2500 rpm though - I'm a really relaxed driver, no rubber burning.

15000 miles? and then no filter changes for 100000 miles? Other way around maybe? Like 150,000 and 10.000 miles?

at 211,000 miles on the `06 Odyssey, running great. Have to do valve cover gaskets again and PCV valve and major cleaning as PCV system of front valve cover is plugged, causing leaks.

All parts were just ordered OEM Honda (Majestic online)

207K miles 2015 Acura TLX 2.4

0 - 60K: dealership bulk oil ~15K OCI
60K - 166K: Kirkland 0W-20; PH7317 ~ 7-8K OCI
166K - current: Valvoline 5W-30HM; PH7317 ~ 7-8K OCI

What was your service interval for the 8-speed DCT? Thanks.

05’ Xterra with 201,000 plus miles. I believe I’m the 3rd owner. Original timing chain tensioners and radiator (I think) it’s a solid unit. I’ve bypassed the radiator, and did the rear diff breather mod so the seals don’t blow out. All common issues on these X’s and other Nissan trucks of the same era. I always keep going back to Nissan for some reason. Their trucks and SUVs have been very good to me. Running Valvoline 5W-30 EP HM.

2007 Toy Highlander, 238,333 miles. 3.3L V6. Only synthetic. Amsoil, Mobil 1 and Valv Maxlife. Great vehicle. 7,000 mile changes.

2000 Nissan Frontier 2.4-liter 4 cylinder, over 232k miles. Bought new from the Nissan Dealer. Used various brands of dino oil. Used either 5W-30, 10W-30, or 10W-40 Motor Oil per the manufacturer's recommendations. Changed oil and oil filter based upon time, not mileage. Now that I am retired, I change the oil once a year.

So far only at 105K I did drain/fill once with ATF type 2 (about 4 quarts)
At that time the oil I drained was looking very clean and I haven't done anything since then.
