I always read about how this is a family site. It's sometimes used as an excuse as why you can't mention politics or other sensitive subjects. But is this really a family site? How many 12 year old care about oil that much? It would be interesting to know if there are in fact children browsing this forum.

Oil and cars are one thing and politics is another nasty thing. But when I hear "this is a family site" I think of pregnant mothers and young children scouring bobitog looking for the tbn of PYB or debating wether M1 has high iron wear or Pennzoil Ultra is marketing hype or if synthetic is a waste of money. But I do respect that this is a car related site and that politics really has nothing to do with cars. But the general and off topic forum most of the time has nothing to do with cars.

I just had a few beers and was thinking.

How about it's a socially safe site? One where if your family happened to find your open web page they wouldn't be shocked or offended or exposed to stuff you might not want them to?

No, you cannot mention these topics because those are the rules you agreed to when you signed for login access.

Better than I've ever done.

Then when moderators lock the topic, or a mod/admin posts to calm it down, they shouldn't say "to keep it family friendly" if that is not the case.

I consider this a family site after being on for a while i am relaxed and the time i spend on here is the time my wife leaves me alone unless of course she wants to talk about oil and that rarely happens, although she is asked to go to wal mart and pick up oil every once and a while when it's on sale only!

My son reads BITOG. He wants his own login, but being that he is only 8, I told him not right now.

Based on reality and results some children are and some are not.

I like how this site stays "classy" compared to other sites.

I've been on some where it is pretty much a free for all.

My two year old loves the photo section....

Our grand daughter would sit by Tony and read BITOG and ask questions not because she wanted to work on a car but because it was their special time. She just turned 20 and told me that she remembers how special she felt being allowed into a grown up world. When Stinky Peterson died she wanted to contribute to the money BITOG raised for his family - she felt a part of this special group of people. That is why it is important to keep this a family site. Each of you can make a special memory for a young person. You never know what sharing your interest with someone will mean to them.

It is more relaxing to exchange information or ask questions when you are not worried about being verbally attacked.

It is a "family site" by the forum owner's definition. I personally think it is a "more family than NSFW" site and I probably wouldn't let my 10 year old (if I have one) read it until he/she grew up to 15 due to some of the borderline topics raised here.

It's safe from the things that typically will rip apart forums, IRC channels and groups of people.

You remove the drama and bad phrases and you keep it clean, intellectual(most of the time) and you get the debates and information you look for.

A reputation and a good perception carry weight when your one of the premier forums on the net. And as for it being a family site, yeah if you stay here long enough, post enough, read enough you figure people out. You know their habits, you know who will jump in and save the day on certain posts etc. Kinda like how a family helps each other, and we each support one another when the time calls for it.

This site brings people together from all walks of life and you push all the drama and differences to the side. What you are left with are people, just human beings and that is what makes this different from many other sites.
