Why didn't I think of that. Of course. The idle pressure is unaffected by the spring tension or lack thereof. So the idle pressure is a good indicator of the overall situation. It then would appear that with idle pressure around 16-18 (probably closer to the 16 now that I ran a load of airborn debris through the oil per 476 ppm lead in link above) would indicate that the bottom end is not what one would consider "tight," but probably very workable (again, hopefully still workable after the debris episode).

So, the bottom line: Good thing I was running THICKer oil (but not thick enough) or the debris would have wreaked worse havoc. And to think I had been planning to run 15w50 this summer, but backed off for fear of the oil being too thick.
 
That's assuming that the relief plug (ball, piston, etc.) is not scored or leaking. Otherwise ..it's like it isn't there
