Thinner oil in 454?

Most of the muscle car 454 ran on 20w50 in the sixties seventies,and eighties and servived happy lives. The ones that ran on 5w30 did not,I know,many of my friends owned these vehicles.

Even more reason to run a lighter oil. The lower the viscosity, the higher the circulation speed of the oil which equates in a higher quantity of heat being dissipated. How many thousands of miles have these engines have ran on a 5w30 that sheared to a 20WT motor oil and still run today with no problems. This is not the 60's when the best protection that could be provided with a higher viscosity oils. There is a lot of other factors to consider besides viscosity to find whats the best oil to protect your engine. Also the film strength argument is moot. What was the film strenght of a mineral SJ oil? A modern PCMO holds up better than that.


If this was entirely true, Ford wouldn't be spec'ing 5w50 for the GT500, Ford GT...etc.

If this was true, Mercedes, BMW....etc wouldn't be spec'ing 5w40 for their Hi-Po mills.

Oil weight is relevant.


True but this is 454 that produces about 230 HP and 385 FT of torque. There is really a really big differance between the motors.

Does not matter put heavier oil in it.

This is case where "Oil 101" and Dr Haas will explode your engine.

Ford engineers felt the need for another viscosity oil, it's a turbo engine. If they thought 10W60 was best they'd have suggested that. Use what the mfg suggests, it makes life easier.
 
Really what is your proof? I have provide many examples of a modern 5w30 shearing into a 5W-20. What do you think a SJ API 5w30 would of done? This is not a stock engine and this a time that a agree with undummy which does not happen very often. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I am 99.999~% sure you will not get better mileage with a 20W oil. A big block doesn't get good mileage. My old 454 got 10 MPG regardless of what oil I used, whether I was towing a boat or not, or if I was going up or down a hill. I tried a 25W mix in my 5.3 and didn't notice any difference in mileage.

I think you should try a heavier oil like Shell Rotella T synthetic 5w-40 oil.

Yes, it is much lower on the power density range than the cited engines, but it likely also doesn't have an oil cooler, or a lube system designed for a 20-weight oil. What does the engine spec, 10w30 or 5w30? the former is a lot more shear stable than the latter.
 
He has modded his oil system. I honestly do not see how using a 20WT motor oil could cause any harm here if he choices to us it. This is my 2 cents.

You're speaking on theory here. Others have posted experience. The point you're missing is that there are areas in an engine that aren't under forced lubrication and there is more to lubrication than simply oil pressure. Whether a 5w30 shears over time to a thick 20-weight is irrelevant. 20-weight oils are not shear-proof themselves, at any rate.

Do you get that if you looked at a 5w30 that used a group I based from 20 years ago after 1K of use that film strength would not be any greater than a 5W-20 of today that is a group II/III based. I would not even try to make this agrument if someone could produce some data that a 20WT motor oil would cause harm to this engine. There is no data to support this claim at all. The OP asked could he use a 20WT motor oil in his 454. The answer is yes and for the majority the engine life it has ran on a 20WT motor oil.

Also yes there are other factors to lubricaton but the only agrument I have had againist useing a 20WT oil is film strength. How do you measure film strenght? You do it by,
the pressure-viscosity coefficient is measured either directly by assessing viscosity as a function of pressure. This is how a engineer establishes a viscosity for protection. Why do you think this is published by the manufacture to inform you that you are using the correct grade of oil. That is why you increase your viscosity when your bearings are worn to provide the correct protection. This is the guide to use. If you use a too thick of viscosity your bearings may be well protected at the trade off of not providing the correct protection for your pistons. There has to be a balance now with going with a 20WT motor oil you do not have the problem with piston protection. The question is about bearing protection and as stated earlier you measure that be pressure.
 
Personally, I'd stick with no lighter than a 30 in there. Most older American engines weren't designed for super thin oils. In light use, it would be fine, but in heavy use (such as the towing you're doing), even if you have enough oil pressure, the thicker bearing film, etc. is still beneficial, particularly in an engine that makes a lot of low end torque (high throttle, low rpm running can be hard on bearings).

I'd agree with the mentions of T6 previously. It won't make any detectable mpg difference with that engine / vehicle combo, but it may help out in terms of engine lifespan.

I've dealt with marine 454s, and under heavy load, they can get the oil [censored] hot. In the case of 1 I've dealt with, normal oil pressure at hot idle is about 38 psi. After running under load (3100 - 3200 rpm, around 2/3 throttle) for 30 mins or so, if you idle it back, it'll show about 20psi of pressure at idle (yes, it has an oil cooler). The pressure slowly comes back up as the oil cools down under lighter load running. That's with 15w40 conventional Rotella in the crankcase, BTW.

Depends. Not all engines shear oil. My Modular doesn't. It varies greatly engine to engine. Have we seen a used oil analysis from this engine confirming that it indeed shears a 30wt to a 20wt?

Also, don't forget HTHS.
 
To the OP-does your engine have the secondary (air-cooled) oil cooler in front of the A/C condenser? If your engine wasn't rebuilt, an HDEO such as 15W40 would be ideal-but what I've read about BB Chevys is their tendency to use oil when worked hard-if you run a synthetic, stick to a slightly thicker one (like the GC I mentioned before which actually behaves like a low 40 weight), and if your engine has a flat-tappet cam, steer clear of the SM rated oils. Under towing heavy or plowing conditions, I just think a 20 weight would be asking for trouble!

I don't either, but it is possible. The Europeans seem to put a lot of value on HTHS.

What about my point regarding shear?
 
Nothing from 5w30's 1990 era in reguards on HTHS! I have found plenty where 350, 383, and 502's from this era that shear GF-4 5w30's to 8.7 to 9.2 range. But not a thing yet on a 454. Check back tomorrow it is after 5 am here and it is time for me to eat.
