Im thinking of switching from valvoline synpower to redline but was wondering what you guys though/if it would be worth the money. Before some of you waste your time I also have absolutely no interest in penzoil or OCI's.

Anyways. Ive got an 01 mustang w/ 4.6 with some work done to it. As far as what pertains to the engine cams, valve springs, and an intercooled vortech v2 s-trim supercharger.

Its an original owner car so im 100% sure oil changes have always been at 3k etc. Used motocraft for awhile, then went to pyb, then mobil1, and now been on valvoline snypower for about 2 years or so. Always with a motocraft or k&n filter.

With that being said I am looking to steer away from the valvoline synpower due to the supercharger sharing oil with the engine rather than being self contained and the heat it produces, although I have yet to have any issues due to such. I also do about 98% city driving, and just started traveling about 50 miles a week, 3-5 miles each way twice a day, and some longer 10 mile or so trips on the weekend. Where as the past 6 months had been 30 miles a day round trip on the highway.

Any suggestions on if I should switch to the redline or not, any pros/cons? Sorry for the long post.

Thanks. I thought about going from 3k to 5k. Just still wasnt too sure since ill be doing mostly ciy driving and those 5k will take awhile to rack up.

beancounter, As in how often will I change it. Or what what period of time will I use it. Changing it 3k, maybe 5k. Period of time depends on how much its gonna cost to ship every time I change it and what kind of results I have with it.

You run 5w20 or 5w30? Right now im running 5qt of 20 and 1 qt of 30 mixed. Thinking about just going to 30. Manual calls for 20 but it seems like there was no change in specs from when ford went from 30 20. Just seems like its all about the CAFE standard [censored]. Id kinda like to go with the 30 for added protection. Or is it true the 20 will protect just as well. I think ive read that somewhere on here before?

I was referring to miles specifically, but both tidbits of info are good.

Personally I don't know if I would go with Redline unless you are running the vehicle extremely hard or taking it to the track. 3-5k with city miles/short drives I would say go with a very good quality synthetic. Those stop-and-go miles where the car doesn't ever get very hot is hard on oil and I wouldn't (again, opinion) care to push a conventional or blend oil just out of personal satisfaction.

Amsoil is my choice, but I would have a slightly difficult time completely justifying it to you for those OCIs, at least in the minds of some. I like to go beyond the bare minimum, so I can see why you're interested in going with a very high quality synthetic and I don't blame you. I would do the same with those mileages anyways, to be honest.

I say do it. If you want to change it at 5k that's fine but I wouldn't do it a mile before 5k. That stuff is expensive and is capable of more. Its your call though.

For what its worth I gave mobil1 a try when I couldnt get a hold of the valvoline. Car seems to run much quieter with the valvoline for some reason.

Thanks for all the input im still on the fence about the price lol.

What weight will you be running, 5W-20 or 5w30?

Red Line makes a great product and I would run it at a minimum 5,000 miles and you could go longer without any problems. I also like the Motorcraft filters.

Also agree with DieselTech about the customer service you get from Red Line.

Itll prolly be 5qts of 5w20 and 1 qt of 5w30 thats what ive been doing so far w/o any issues. 50/50 also crossed my mind but kinda hard to do now since i buy the valvoline in the 5qt jug then an extra quart.

Just looked at summit.com and apparently they only have 5w20 in 4quart jugs so ill go with 4qts of 5w20 and 2 qts of 2w30. Looks like its gonna cost $70 shipped if I go that route :o.

I personally would not waste my time mixing weights, it really accomplishes nothing except maybe a good feeling. The 5w30 would probably serve you well. Give Dave at Red Line a call and tell him what you have, what you have done to it, your driving habits, and where you live. He will steer you in the right direction. He is really very straight forward and will not steer you in the wrong direction. He can be reached at (800) 624-7958.

There are many places that might be able to beat Summits price. Use to be a place in either NC, SC, or Virginia, not sure which that had some great prices on Red Line products. You can also order direct from Red Line.

Whats everyones opinion on royal purple? Just curious. Personally I think it seems a bit over rated? I tried it once in the car, and once in the truck (4.2) and couldnt tell one bit of a difference compared to the regular valvoline white bottle or mc5k the truck usually gets and valvoline synpower the car gets. I actually believe it runs smoother with the synpower.
