I have roughly five more liters of Mobil 1 5w30 left, and I am thinking of using Amsoil for the first time. I have two vehicles, and want to use 5-30 for both. Amsoil has two 5-30 versions, an XL and an ASL. What is the difference between the two, besides price. I like an 8000 km interval?

AMSOIL has a very good product with the XL line. I would not be afraid of running it up to 10,000 to 15,000km.
Again depending on the type of driving and vehicle in question can and will make a difference in our recommendations.

Not trying to highjack this post, but where can you buy AMSOIL oil? I always try to buy oil from parts chains because if I'm out of town or in a bind I can always find the oil I need. While AMSOIL comes highly recommended, I can't find any parts stores that sell it. How does someone get their hands on AMSOIL?

What base group does the 5w30 HDD (series 3000) use... Group III or IV? Is this also a good long life oil?

I don't even stock the XL line (except the 5W-20, which I am getting rid of in favor of the new 0W-20).
I recommend the ASL 5w30 over the XL, and if you take some oil samples, think you would find you could easily go at least 10,000 km. AMSOIL recommends up to 40,000 or a year in normal use, 25,000 km in heavy duty.

I chose the Amsoil HDEO 5w30 for my gas powered Nissan Titan. My best used oil analysis came from a HDEO, M-1 Delvac 5w-40 (old formula)and I thought this oil was along the same lines. Use is lot's of stop and go, short distance driving and idling. Both are SL oils which is spec'd for my year of truck... Any major disadvantage to a HDEO in a gas vehicle(other than potential Cat issues...)?
