Does the Prius accommodate your dogs and bikes as well as the Rogue does, or would you need a Prius V for that?

Rogue Transmission 2012 6K miles
That's one of several low-mileage, new-ish Rogue transmissions for sale. Worst case, you'd be looking at about 2K for shipping and installation. I can't imagine any AT being rebuild for less money these days. Bottom line, I wouldn't worry about it.

To me, I'd get the 2015 VW Golf with manual everything if reliability is an issue. Lots of reliability problem with VWs involve electronics. These cars feel good to drive.
If you want your mountain bike inside, consider a Montague folding bike that you can fit in the hatch.

Hey I daily drive a VW and even I'll admit that it isn't cheap to maintain. Definitely cost more than my Camry. Way more. But it about evens out with my gas savings.

I sure as heck wouldn't trade-in solely because of CVT worry. Pretty sure any late model 6, 7, 8, etc.. speed AT will be a pricey a component to replace or repair should a problem arise as well.
If you're just not happy with the vehicle or sick of it, and doing so won't jeopardize your finances, why not spur the economy a bit and get something else. I know I've been down that road a few dozen times. lol

Your "mechanic" is way off on his estimate. Ask a dealer or independent transmission shop.
