Thinking about getting a Harley

Have you consider Victory ????They are American made as well and boy are they Macho and Sexy at the same time!!! Their 100 cubic inch motor is sweet! Nothing wrong with a Sportster if I were ever going to buy a Harley it would be a Sportster. I like bikes that are fun to ride and easy to ride. What engine choices do they offer on the Sportster these days??

Victory is too expensive. I don't want to spend that much on a bike.

You can get a Sportster with an 883 or 1200 engine. Fuel Injection is std for 07, which gives a 15% torque increase on the 883 over 06.

The used Victory bikes aren't that expensive. They drop in value about as fast as ricers.

Check the papers.

But I'd advise getting the HD as well.

XL 883R would be my pick in the Sportster line. Easy price and looks good. Easy H-D resale value.

My overall H-D pick is the FLHRC. The new Twin Cam 96 is a sweet engine.

I do ask that you go out and ride several diffrent bikes just for fun. It's a great way to spend a day with some friends AND you learn a lot more about bikes.

I have a dollar that says you will find several other bikers to ride with from the other dealerships.

I guess they’re just like cars. I suppose people buy a certain brand car for the prestige while a Ford, GM, Toyota, and Honda etc…will serve them just fine. I think Harley is one of those prestigious names in the motorcycle industry.

I haven't owned a bike since 1987 , I have had Yamahas , Kawasakis and Hondas ,never a Harley . If I wanted a Harley type bike only a Harley would do.There is something about a Harley that no other motorcycle has,I don't know what it is though!!!

The Harley Davidson is the only motorcycle made that actually has a soul.

Seriously... an HD is about as close to a living, breathing machine as man has ever made. There's a Harley shaped void in every true American's heart. (And we now see why G0D shaped the heart much like that bold and rumbling V-twin engine!)
laugh.gif
Some folks try to ignore this void. Others try to fill it with tripe. But in the end, self deprivation--or worse yet self deception--is an unhealthy thing to foist on the American heart. It makes some folks downright deluded and rude. To better understand this depraved condition (indeed, the condition of being "Harley-less") you might find a whimpering or two, or maybe a smattering of rebuke from such afflicted ones printed below, so read on (but don't be decived)...

Yep, you see one of those other Motorcyles on the road, it's just a Motorcyle. You see a Harley on the road it's a Harley.

And, don't forget, the Harley is a TRUE American company, as it uses about 20% Foreign-made parts...just like the American Population. The 20% is a guess, the last time I checked, which was in the mid-late 90's, Harley stated it was about 17% foreign-made. Nothing says "Harley" like the stamp "Made in Finland" on the rear brakelight cover...

Ride Safe, whatever your choice(s)!

Well, I've already been in contact with the dealer in Greenville and here is a photo of the one I'm going to look at tomorrow sitting on their showroom floor:

Hi G-Man,
I'm new to Motorcycles and bought my 1st bike this year, a 2006 1200 Harley Sportster and I love it!!! One reason I bought it because a few co-workers who ride told me to compair the build quality of the Harley to any other bike made today. I looked at the Yamahas, Suzukis, Handas ect. They told me to look for things like how much the tank wiggled and fenders and pipes and just to check everything on the bikes. The Harley was MUCH tighter then all other bikes. It had no play in the tank and the fenders are strong enough that you can acctually lift the back end of the bike up by them with out any damage. Everything on the Harley was tighter and fit was better. The crafsmenship put into the Harley was clearly better then all the Japanese bikes. So far the only thing I have had a problem with is the horn sometimes does not work at full power and is quiet.

Now I can not say how long term reliablity will be but in the 7 months I have had the bike my buddys 2006 Honda 1800 has broken down twice on him and that ruined our day of riding twice! The 1st time his coil went out and the 2nd time was an eletrical problem. So as far as I can see in my short time riding the Harleys have been more reliable then the Japanese bikes.

Comfort is great I think and I'm 6ft 190lbs and I go on 600 mile trips with no comfort problem but I rest every 100 to 150 miles also. And heak the 1200 will keep up and out excellerate many of the bigger bikes. I can keep up with my friends 1860 Yamaha Stratoliner without breaking a sweat!
Here is my 06 Sporty:

And my wifes Sporty:

Also remember to ride year round! 18 grand and 18 miles don't make you a rider! I was riding all over tonight and it was 19 degrees F out...beautiful night for a ride! Coldest I rode in was 10 F and with the wind chill is was way below zero! Enjoy your new bike!!!!

I really like the front wheel on that Bacon-seed! Nice! Greenville has some good places to ride up in the hills, that bike should be fun there. Remember to ALWAYS be able to accelerate in a turn (acceleration raises your bike in the rear, which gives you MORE turning clearance), and look where you want to go...do NOT look at what you are trying to avoid...whether it is a rock, the back bumper of a car, or the outside edge of the road you are afraid you're going to go over. Learn to brake hard enough your front tire leaves a mark on the road. Learn to control/correct a skid. Learn to do u-turns with confidence (again, look over your shoulder where you want to go). Be safe!

Well, she's mine now. Will pick it up tomorrow after I go to DMV and get my permit.
