Thinking about a yz125 dirtbike?

How many times have you rebuilt it?
Once when I bout it for 50 bucks. The crank bearings were shot so that allowed the crank to wobble enough to wear out the case seals, these are case inducted motors so if the bottom end isn't sealed it won't pull a vacuum on the carb. If I recall correctly, rebuilt the entire motor for about 300 bucks but that included a new crank/seals/piston&rings/jug bore for the new piston and carb rebuild kit.

Any updates?

Did you pick a bike?

One of my previous toys. Nice to have a tag on it so I can ride the backroads without worry

Trying to decide still. There aren't many places to ride them around here, so it would be a big loss if they say I can't ride it on the backroads. I see mostly atvs and side by sides, but not many dirt bikes. So you have a license plate to make it legal? I don't see brake lights or turn signals.

It would be nice if I could ride one. Looks like the 2 stroke version is twice the amount as the 4 stroke. It's like $3500 for a 4 stroke honda crf125 and $7k for a yamaha yz125

The CRF125 is about as close to an old-school Honda as one can get. About 9HP/45mph, 4 speeds, a smooth running engine and about 5 and a half inches of suspension travel.

The YZ125 is another thing entirely. With 4x more HP, 6 gears and 12.5 inches of suspension travel. Top speed about 75mph with stock gearing and about 90-100mph with much taller gearing, such as in SuperMoto trim.

It is interesting to compare the two. One is a play bike, the other a real race bike.

My favorite bike of all time, the Yamaha IT490. I had a street legal one, with tons of mods. I loved it because it could do everything.

Locally, many of the kids are riding compact electric motorcycles. It seems they are far more 'socially acceptable' than gas powered bikes. The strict local cops don't care, and neither do the often difficult and annoying bicyclists.

They ride along the bicycle path I use for my morning ride. In and amongst the lower cost Chinese stuff are a few Surron bikes, and Segway dirt bikes, both actually look like they work well. The Segway replacement battery seems to be $1399 for a mid sized pack. ($450-$3000 aftermarket choices)

A friend purchased 3 different Zero full sized electric motorcycles, the 'SR' model, one of the early models had a complete battery failure, not a fire, but failed cells. A replacement battery pack with upgraded capacity was $6K, yikes! I must admit, these bikes are really impressive and fun to ride!

One thing is for sure, a two stroke bike will still run and make rated power 50 years down the road if properly cared for. Whereas a battery might be good for 10 years, maybe.

Even so, something like this might be fun to own, easy to deal with and fit shorter riders.
