Things you have to do to new cars that you didn't have to do with old cars.

Use complete fuel system cleaner with P.E.A. to keep the injectors clean.

Drop a gas tank to replace a fuel pump.

Be careful that the fob does not get bumped and open the sunroof when the vehicle is parked outside in the rain.

Have the vehicle totaled because all the air-bags went off in a minor accident.

Make sure all 4 tires are the same diameter for an AWD vehicle.

Replace all 4 tires because 1 was damaged and un-repairable and all 4 have to be the same diameter for an AWD vehicle.

Get the camera aligned when replacing a windshield.

Pay a fortune to replace an external light.

Pay a lot more for insurance because of the cost of all of the above.

Have the vehicle recalled for some designed in problem.

Need a part and even the dealer can not get it from the manufacturer, resulting in the vehicle being unusable for a very long time.

Have a turbo go bad.

Have a high pressure fuel pump go bad.

Have to replace much more than a fuel injector to replace a fuel injector.

Have to repair a power window.

Have to repair the AC system.

Have to use seat-belts.

Have to use child seats.

Have to shut off the electric closing doors on the minivan in the summer because they won’t shut, yet the actuator keeps running, in the summer when it’s hot.

I second the needing a computer to change the brakes comment.

Having to change proximity sensors for blind spot monitoring (thanks Chrysler)

Having to scroll through a menu to see the oil pressure or actual engine temp and not see it on the dashboard.

Have to turn off auto restart.

Have to turn off traction control in deep snow when you want to be able to spin the wheels some.

Have to change cvt fluid often.

Have to replace timing belt.

Have to replace the tensioner of the serpentine belt when replacing belt.

Have to adjust valves (honda). Compared to the GM vehicles that had hydraulic lifters.

Have to put up with lane keeping assist fighting you when it's wrong.

Have to repair the door unlock when slightly touched handle, that only works if the fob is near.

Have to clean out sun roof drain tubes to prevent water getting into the vehicle.

Have to change rear end fluid much more often and can only use manufacturers fluid (honda).

Have some electronic component not stay powered off when vehicle is not being used, and only come on intermittently, making it very hard to find, and having the vehicles battery completely discharged resulting in it not starting when needed.

Change a cabin air filter. But I gotta admit it is nice to check tire pressures while driving 75mph on the interstate.

Having to change the same setting OVER AND OVER because the car thinks it's smarter than you, and resets it on every restart.

My Prius, for example, thinks I always want "no rear HVAC" and defaults to it to try and save a little MPG.

Have the exact opposite issue in the Transits-they seem to default to recirc/max A/C every time the A/C is turned on!

This thread reinforces my belief that modern vehicles are excessively complicated and that automotive technology probably peaked sometime around the year 2000.

Only if you are throwing a code or not totally at operating temperature. When normal conditions persist it's a none issue.
OBD2 readiness codes take a couple of drive cycles to get set. Won't pass an e-check until they do.

Kumbaya beater club....
I do just like a simple mechanical car, some steering feel, real throttle cable, row my own gears, manual HVAC, dumb cruise is good enough, power windows and locks are nice with a remote. NA port FI engine, I think that's it. Also a wagon, no expensive parts inside the cabin to break, and not too many under the hood either. So I've got one for now, but the next one is going to be harder to find as unfortunately, these haven't been available for 17 years.
