things not looking great for the Mustang Mach-E sales

A fun car with some neat dynamics. I put about 8,000km on my wife's company car. It could be an even better car if they got rid of the Ford tech. It gets kind of old trying to stare at an undersized and partially blocked gauge cluster/digital panel and navigating that big touch screen with ford's proprietary over complicated multi step process for simple items.

I do not know how is to drive that car. But last month I was a passenger in the back seat in Amsterdam, and it is absolutely, without any doubt, the MOST uncomfortable vehicle I have been driven in. There is some pipe under the seat that you sit on. Luckily it is in a horizontal position. The ride was 15min from airport to hotel, but I could not wait to get out.

If Mazda really wants to make money, they should come up with an electric 2 door suv, and then name it the Miata mach-E.

Who wouldn't want to buy one of those?
The problem is that Mazda is in bed with Toyota on hybrids, so presumably EV as well. They do not have the budget to do an EV as well as the bigger makers do. Take a look at the Subaru, who is also sharing with Toyota. Its abysmal.

Ive not ridden in one, but have heard they're very "bouncy".

I test drove one and there was a lot to like about it. All the same EV driving qualities you are familiar with. And the seats were very comfortable. The interior volume seemed large, and yet Ford made sure to have door features (protruding speakers) that take up critical space by the knees. Ugh.

The shorter range example I drove lost quite a bit of charge on my 15 or 20 mile highway test drive. I was driving it fairly quickly, like 80 or so, it lost a percent per mile. Although I was not a serious buyer, I could see the practicality and appeal of the thing.

The interior looks cheap and tacky, the ipad is not doing the look any favors it just adds to the cheesy look.

IMO this is just a result of market saturation combined with some other minor effects (fads fade, interest rates change, etc). The MAIN issue is one of market capacity; the law of supply and demand is no clearer than the Mach E.

EVs have some very good applications, and there are people who are willing to adapt to the unique benefits and challenges of EVs. But that percentage of the overall market is small in relative volume, and the assumptions of continued market growth were based on some really bad assumptions. The sales increases in EVs seen in the last couple of years is unlikely to continue; those who wanted them already have them. Those that got them and were unimpressed after ownership won't go back, either.

None of this should surprise a rational person.

What is abysmal? Please be specific.

Early on, they sold well around here. Hardly see them now. And it's pretty easy to sell an EV around here...
I have never been in one.
Oddly seems as prevalent in my locale as Tesla Model 3. Tesla has no dealership footprint in NH just superchargers thankfully popping up.

I dont think any small EV at $45,000+ will have mass adoption. Even the less expensive? VW ID4 are easily available on the coast here.

Agreed. I feel like the base $35k Equinox EV will be a significant bump to the Range vs. Price possibilities/market. Just received its EPA-estimate range at 319 miles. GM Ultium vehicles have been doing WAY better than EPA range in most test too.

Base Mach-e range is 250 EPA and base ID.4 range is only 209 miles. Even standard Model Y is 260 - which is overly optimistic, like all Teslas.

Brings up a great point. I did not ride in the back, probably should have!

The Kia EV Uber I rode in had much the same issue. The rear seat was not great, and the ride was downright uncomfortable on the NY streets. Bouncing and jouncing over every imperfection. Like you, I could not wait to get out of the thing. I left wondering how, in 2023, anybody could make a car with such flaws.

I would only want an electric car if it had a pantograph, and could be recharged while I drive from an overhead wire.

And styled like a Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 locomotive.

IDK man, but would love to be in the meeting where consensus was reached that that is good solution. I mean, I was glad it wasn’t in vertical position.
I think it is downright stupid when manufacturers don’t put dedicated, big footrest for a driver, but THIS thing is I think sabotage.
