Thin 5-20 oils?

IIRC Havoline and Pennzoil conventional are fairly thin. Various manufacturers' sites will have viscosity specs for their oils.

There's an old post somewhere around here that lists viscosities for a bunch of oils. I don't have the link on this computer but I'm trying to find it.

EDIT: Ah, here it is.

I wish I could post an Excel spreadsheet here, as I've put lots of 0W-20 and 5W-20 viscosity data into one. I've been collecting this data to see how close in viscosity were 0W-20 and 5W-20 oils...

In order of increasing 100 deg C cSt viscosities:

M1 0W-20 (old formula) - 8.4
Schaeffer 2000 5W-20 - 7.5 to 8.5
Amsoil XLM 5W-20 - 8.5
PenzPlat 5W-20 - 8.5
RLI 0W-20 - 8.6
M1 0W-20 (new fuel economy formula) - 8.6
ValvoSynP 0W-20 - 8.65
ValvoSynP 5W-20 - 8.65 (no, not a typo!)
RLI 5W-20 - 8.8
M1 5W-20 - 8.9
M1 EP 5W-20 - 8.9
MobilClean 5W-20 - 8.9
Amsoil ASM 0W-20 - 9.0
SYNTEC 5W-20 - 9.0
Redline 5W-20 - 9.1

As can be seen, some 5W-20 oils are thinner than some 0W-20's at 100 deg C...

thanks,
ben

My buddy just hit 120K miles on his 03 Crown Vic using 5W20 Motorcraft Full Synthetic. It still sounds nice and smooth..BTW he sits in bumper to bumper everyday with the a/c on of coarse..For the first 100K miles he ran the 5W20 Synthetic Blend..His OCI is 5K miles.

So is 4 Cst difference if you're talking an engine that could care less about using a "thick" 30 weight. It's also a moot point if the same engine has the capability of experiencing 250F oil temps on anything between 9.25 and 12.49 Cst while @ 100C. The overlaps far exceed the margins. The differences converge as you go hotter. We're talking your average driver/engine now. Some do require heavier stuff, but ..

Pennzoil 5W-20 evry 2,000 is what my local police uses. I know several of the officers of that departments. They put 6 hours of their 8 hour times three shifts a day. And of the seven cops six drive those cars everyday drive like sixteen year olds whith there first wheels. We have one with 145,000, two with 80,000 to 100,000, and an 06 with 50,000 to 75,000. not a one of them use a drop between oil changes noe do they show any signs of slowing down anytime soon.

That 2000 is probably more like 5k if you factor average fuel economy between idling and yahoo'ing it.
