To address two things not covered in this thread so far:
Stopping shopping at all places that have discount card(mentioned in OP): Amazon has a Prime Card that gives 5% cash back on pretty much all Amazon purchases or enough to keep you from shopping there anymore.
Why do stores not simply lower the prices and eliminate cards?(Grampi)
I wouldn't be surprised if people actually using the cards is in the minority. I had someone at work mention this revelation they had at Kroger in the past month or so...If you use an SC card, you can save so much! The stores bank on that. They can look like they are giving great deals and then rely on human nature to not follow through. This is similar to MIR. Spend almost 50 cents and your time to get a check in the mail for $2....
