Commercial comes on touting a divorce lawyer. Has a lady talking about ruining her husbands Christmas by filing for divorce.

Then another shot shows a couple watching this same lawyer commercial on TV, but then they both run to the phone and are wrestling over it so they can call the lawyer first.

Nice way to perpetuate negative stereotype of lawyers........

You make sales by confirming intuitions and preconceived notions, not by bucking them...

Lawyers perpetuate their negative stereotypes just fine by themselves. They don't need assistance from advertising agencies.

You got that right.

Yes, the commercials are simply playing into the pre-existing impulses of people to be adversarial. If the market were different the commercials would be different.

Nothing human about it these days - dog eat dog and who can get over first is the name of the game. Although a totally invalid argument, it could be said that every major problem in the world can be boiled down to one thing - too many people...

In the old days there were "Accidents" Now, anything and everything negative that could happen to a person is not an "accident" or that person't fault. Its always someone else's "negligence" And it usually involves that "neglegent" party having deep pockets.

The degree to which lawyers and their clients are over litigating is beyond insane. And its only gonna' get worse.

I would love to see tort reform but its never gonna happen.

Well time to go to McDonalds to spill a coffee on myself.

Exactly. The "Lawyers' Monopoly" is out of control and really does way more harm than good in most cases.

Beyond the lawyer bit, that is just sad. But I hear/see it more and more... The woman is going to "stick it" to the man. Then she goes off to shop at Nordstroms while he eats alpo.

I was on an airplane and a younger girl, 16-17ish got into a fight with her mother because the mother had cheated on the father. The mother was going for a divorce and to set up a new relationship/life and the girl was MAD.

I bet the woman will be pulling alimony and child support from the man anyway the way things go. Horrible. Go 16yo girl, stick it to your mother and dont let her get away with a dime for her actions.

Read about the case, not accept the cultural myth about it.

What's to read..she spilled coffee on herself and wound up with almost $6000,000. What more is there to say. Someone who was 79 didn't understand coffee was hot??

Spin it any way you like.

How about the fact that she got second and third degree burns?

How about the fact that McDonald's was intentionally keeping the coffee at those temperatures, which it knew could cause injuries, just so that it would stay warm in the car and/or be too hot to drink until the customer had driven too far away to want to turn around and return it if they were unsatisfied?

Laughing at people is easy. Writing them off as scumbags is easy, too. Learning the facts is hard. You have explicitly stated that you don't care to know all the facts; you have picked two (spilled coffee, won money), and that's enough for you. In essence, this means you are completely unwilling to appraise the situation fairly. That's okay. Do your thing. Just try not to ridicule people who keep an open mind and devote time and effort to understanding these things.

Again. Read the case and not accept the myth.

I don't see how this perpetuates the negative stereotypes of the lawyers. One logical question would be that if the couple in question hate each other so much, why are they sitting on a couch together and waiting for a commercial to start the divorce process.

But it's a commercial for adults and the main point is to get the market's attention and stand out of the competition.

Perhaps....

But eventually I would return to work and have to argue with defense attorneys who may know criminal law but are completely ignorant of State Department of Public Safety Regulations. And they will threaten me and scream like idiot children and remove all doubt in my mind that they might have a shred of decency or maturity.
