Setup:

2002 Mazda Protege 5MT
55,440 miles on the car.
Unknown previous maint. history. FWIW, XOM Superflo 10w-30 appeared brown after 1K of use.
Central Texas climate, trips are generally at least 10 miles in length
3.5 qt Sump Capacity

Oil:
Supertech 10w-30 Dino, API SM/ILSAC GF-4. WPP produced, from a blue 5qt jug.
Mazda OEM Oil Filter

This oil will be run for 5K.

This is HondaMan's newly acquired car...he has volunteered to run this oil in his engine for me in exchange for a small task that I promised to do.

Excellent. I too will be testing ST WPP 5W30 SM oil that is in my wife's Malibu Maxx LT (17,600 miles on vehicle, ST3387A filter). So far, it's been in for 1200 miles, and looks slightly brown, which means it's doing what it's supposed to.
I will be using Blackstone labs and anticipate decent results. I have been a consistant user of XOM and WPP ST oils and my Jeep and other vehicles seem to "like" it. We've had some pretty cold weather and some short trips around town. So far, the OLM is down to 81% with only 1200 miles, so I anticipate around a 5K or less interval this time.

Michael, it will be interesting to compare results.

I've got ST 10w-40 in both of my teenage cousin's cars because they stiff me on oil change monies. It's labeled SM, I can't see it being too bad. It's not that I can't spring for the Havoline, but putting in SuperTech meakes me feel better, and the name-brand stuff can be for when they are paying.

I'm mystified by the number of posters who mindlessly equate WPP ST motor oil with watered-down frog snot. Yet, the UOAs support the confidence actual users have in the WPP product. I look forward to reading the next batch of ST reports.

Ray H,

Is SM GF4 rated SuperTech any better than SL GF3 rated Havoline, Pennzoil, GTX or Superflo ?
dunno.gif

Don't forget the fact that in some parts of the country (here in the Northeast for example) Super Tech dino is actually supplied by Exxon-Mobil. This should give the naysayers a bit more confidence compared to WPP Super Tech as WPP is a small and relatively unknown player in the motor oil market.

I stopped by a Wal Mart that I do not usually shop at today. There were 5 qt bottles of WPP mixed in with the usually Exxon Mobil based ST. I thought that this might be an old stock being pulled out of inventory. Is this caused by Katrina-Rita supply issues or did Wal Mart go back to WPP?

To be clear for everyone:

I purchased a blue 5 QT jug of Super Tech 10W30. The cap is black. Cost = $ 5.48
The words Super TECH are embossed into the plastic slightly below the mouth of the jug.

The jug is shaped like a typical coolant jug... not like the Super Flow/M1 styles.

On the bottom the letters WPP are enclosed in an oval.

API Service SM,SL,SJ,SH
ILSAC GF-4,GF-3

Donut states API Service SM, SAE 10W30

Initial impressions:

No more or less noisy then Super Flow, which I do feel to be more noisy than most.
After several hundred miles, the oil on the stick is still VERY clean.

I did also note this to Michael: (which I feel he is too young to appreciate)

The oil smells very old school. Smells like OIL.

All the EM Supertech stuff is gone now with all new WPP stuff in it's place here in MD.

The WPP containers are more square shaped btw.

Here's a question for the ages: does brand or who makes the oil really matter if the oil meets or exceeds SM GF4 specs? From what I understand, that's a pretty tough standard to meet and any oil that does should be a darn good oil.

bottgers if an oil meets spec its good. You can go better look at an Valvoline UOA it meets spec but after an relatively shot OCI it was pretty much spent. Which is ok but if you want a little breathing room try an oil that goes beyond spec.
