The below is a VOA on dino Havoline 5W-30 with Deposit Shield carrying API SM ILSAC GF-4.

Code:

Aluminium 0

Chromium 0

Iron 0

Copper 0

Lead 0

Tin 0

Molybdenum 161

Nickel 0

Manganese 0

Silver 0

Titanium 0

Potassium 1

Boron 55

Silicon 3

Sodium 1

Calcium 1536

Magnesium 30

Phosphorus 609

Zinc 710

Barium 0

SuS @ 210F: 56.6 should be 56 - 64

Flash in F: 420 should be > 410

Fuel %: - should be < 2.0

Antifreeze %: - should be 0.0

Water %: 0.0 should be < 0.1

Insolubles: TR should be < 0.6

Blackstone Comments: No problems showed up in this sample of serviceable Texaco Havoline 5W/30 (SM/GF-4) oil. The viscosity and flashpoint were both in the normal range for this type of oil. Insolubles showed up at a trace level. This is a fairly common find for virgin oil and something the filter should remove once the oil goes into use. The TBN was strong at 6.8, showing lots of active additive left in the oil. 1.0 is considered too low. Molybdenum, phosphorus, and zinc are all anti-wear additives, while boron, calcium, and magnesium are detergent/dispersant type additives.

My Comments: Ran a VOA on this to see the Potassium and Sodium contents as I'm doing a 1000 mile run of this in my brothers T-bird (Ford 3.8L V-6 of course) after they replaced the intake manifold and head gaskets for leaking. Now I know whatever Potassium and Sodium we see in his 1000 mile UOA will be coolant, and if the job they did was a good one.

Both calcium and moly are much higher on this oil...these results are not correct.

I would agree. The results from the previous VOA:

Havoline 5/30 NEW deposit control (left side)
Havoline 5/20 OLD (right side)
Boron 72ppm.....70ppm
Moly 226........455
Phos 778........721
Zinc 886........854
Calcium 1860....1441
Mag 41..........58
Others Vis @ 100 9.6.....7.7
Vis @ 40 59.7.....41.6
VI 144............156
TBN 2896 8.55.....8.54

If for some reason Texaco has thinned down the add pack on later version of this formula, that would really be a disappointment for me. I have been using this oil in good faith that Havoline is still a good oil, but if these new results are correct, then I may have to rethink my choice.

I will have a UOA on both cars in about 60 days, so I guess that will tell the tale....
