The Size Of Touchscreens Is Getting Ridiculous!

......... navigation is the right tool.

If I have to go somewhere I'm not familiar with, I just look it up on Google Earth. I get a nice above ground look at everything around it. And then go to street level, and can see surrounding buildings and landmarks that will guide me right to it. I know exactly where I'm going, the best route to take, along with what to look for when I get there. And the best and closest place to park when I do.

What was unfamiliar now becomes all but a repeat visit. All I have to do then is drive the car there, and pay attention to the road..... Just like you're supposed to. No fiddling around pressing buttons. No carrying on conversations with dashboards. No one telling me to, "Turn left in 227 feet, 5 inches. No taking my eyes off the road for any reason. Another words, no distracted driving what so ever.

Up until a few years ago I had never used any kind of navigation except a map or memory. If you are going to a location in a unfamiliar area the navigation is the right tool.

If you start taking a cab chances are the driver will be using navigation. The old days when a taxi driver knew a city like the back of their hand is over.
It's not just directions...the real-time traffic and police positions are HUGE with apps like Waze.

That won’t help when there’s been an accident/heavy congestion or unexpected road closure. Navigation can route you around that long before you ever see it yourself.

But now you have to look at a device and possibly one with a smaller screen.

Please telle me, what exactly is distracting you on this example?

Again, what's so evil?

In case of my GTI I can either switch it off, use 'performance monitor' (oil temp etc), display several styles of clock among some other things.

It's quite simple, don't buy it.

In four years I never never ever needed to manually adjust dimming. It's just perfectly doing its job with the default auto setting. Same applies to the 12.7" digital instruments - just perfect in the summer sun as it is during the darkest night.

If someone finds this dazzling (night mode obviously) he probably shouldn't drive a car at night anyway:

This size is not what I was referring to... this is a small screen.. I was referring to the larger tablet size ones like in the Teslas , higher end Ram Trucks and the new Tundra.

Already there with Mercedes. View attachment 71845
Looks like they already forgot how to implement switches, given that undecipherable row of them below the vents.
Speaking of vents, was there a sale on vents that year?

What a poor dash design. Kid's these days with their Solidworks knowledge, but no design chops.

I do appreciate the center console grab handles:
" I was distracted and flipped the car and now rolling the car down and embankment - hang on ! "

Are your settings set to auto brightness?

Yes, it is set to auto brightness on the Mazda. The problem is that I do much of my night time driving on rural roads that have no streetlights. It is darker than a tomb outside on nights with no moonlight.
The Mazda LED adaptive headlights do a great job of illuminating the roads but driving visibility is better for me when I don't have even a dimmed touchscreen in my face. I suppose if I were driving in more urban settings where there is a lot of artificial lighting all over the light from the screen wouldn't be so bothersome in the cabin.

The car audio aficionados will find the new OEM trend of big screens hard, if not impossible to replace and upgrade the audio system. Surprisingly enough, the new “tablet” HMI infotainment on newer Toyota and Honda use a 1DIN head unit behind them - and the aftermarket(Metra, iDatalink, and PAC for interfacing with Pioneer, Alpine and Kenwood making “modular” decks now) has actually made stuff to fit the new Toyota New Global Architecture cars and some Hondas. Kenwood’s got a 10” “floating” display out as well.

But the aftermarket is struggling to work around some of the integration - Honda uses ANC, and new GM/Ford/Mopar use data/digital audio instead of analog signals between the head unit and amps. Mercedes, BMW and more recently Hyundai was using SPDIF or TOSLINK digital audio between the head unit and amp. For now, the aftermarket is using vehicle interfaces and DSPs to separate/sum/normalize the output from many factory sound systems, especially “premium” branded systems to feed an aftermarket amp if someone wants to gut the factory speakers for any reason.

8" is about the norm today.... but that's not the point of the thread, it's the huge screens as pointed on the 1st post.

the older MIB-II units, 5.8" to 6.5" isn't that big, and tiny by today's standards.

I was gonna make a thread on how much I liked the tech from my mom's '17 fusion platinum over my '15 focus but I might as well post in here instead.

The screens are only distracting if you look at them or if you have a poorly designed screen like Nick1994 pointed out.

Planning a trip beforehand and printing out Google maps is no better than looking at a Rand map. It doesn't show any real-time traffic updates or road closures. Both of which would have severely screwed me over this past weekend when MO decided to close off the I44/I55 ramp. Having navi on a larger screen on the dash, telling me I have 200ft before I turn right is much more convenient than me trying to look at it on my phone or on 10 pieces of paper. Now that's distracting.

Lane-keeping to me is meh but adaptive cruise control is amazing. Parking assist, I've never tried. But these are driver aids, not driver replacements. If you don't want this, get a trim or vehicle that doesn't have it. There's plenty of other options.

Heated and cooled seats? YES!
