The Saga of Two Car Guys
This is a fictional story written by me.. the names of the people and products are fictional, but I think you'll have fun with it.
John and George were co-workers at the auto plant where they made the US Pasenger model 1. It was a simple car, no frills, but generally well accepted as a decent commuter car. Not only did John and George work at the same plant, but also lived in the same neighborhood, so their long commute to work was the same too.
Both gents were mechanically inclined, and did their own car maintenence. Sometimes they would argue about what was best for a vehicle, and who took better care of their cars. Since the commute to work was the same, they agreed to a challenge. Each would buy a new Passenger Model 1 and over the next 10 years, see who could get the most miles out of it before the engine or transmission began to fail. They went to the dealership and bought identically equiped vehicles and the challenge was set.
John was a car hobbyist who learned car repair from his father.
George was a member of the BITOG Forums.
5000 miles:
John goes to the auto parts store and spends 25$ on oil and a good filter from Jones auto parts.
George has been reading the forums for the last month and special orders Super Mega Synthetic oil that is blessed by a man on a mountain in Tibet, add some UltraSlickFactor add-in, and a SuperMicroTech Oil filter... with shipping, at a cost of 80$.
10K Miles
John goes back to Jones auto parts and buys the same oil supplies, Super Fuel Injector Bath and an air and fuel filter too... spending 55$
George sends an oil sample to Genius labs and gets his UOA in..(30$) and snickers as he doesn't have to change his oil again. In the mean time his 50$ restriction guage and Scan-O-Matic 9000 (250$) say the oil and fuel filter are fine.. so he snickers at John for having to change his oil...and wasting money on that fuel stuff... the Scan-O-Matic shows no fuel restriction.
15K Miles
John Goes back to Jones Auto parts for the same filter and oil (26$).. darn oil is going up in price too.
George sends in another sample to the lab (30$) and is beaming and posting online that he STILL doesn't have to change his oil.. SuperMicroTech is the best oil filter ever! George still doesn't have to buy an air filter because the super gauge says it's a waste of 10$... ha ha ha... John.. I got you now.

60K Miles
John buys a transmission filter from Jones Auto, and the same stuff he's been buying... he adds HiTek5 transmission fluid like the book says
George Gets a special super high flow transmission filter bypass modification kit from MagnaPart and customizes the transmission for better filtration, installs magnets all around and buys RaceMaster 5000 super all synthetic transmission fluid.
By this point they compare log books.. George beams that he is getting an extra 0.25MPG than John is.

120K Miles
John suspects his motor is a little dirty and buys a bottle of 5 minute engine wash $4 at Jones' along with the maintenence supplies he's been getting all along...
George special orders EngineBathSupreme paying 25$ with shipping, and chuckles to himself while patting himself on the back for having a cleaner engine than John... in the mean time he's been running a long thread with pictures every 10 miles.
FAST FORWARD
280K Miles
Johns car is burning a little oil... so he adds a can of Motor Stop Smoke X from Jones'.. along with his usual stash of stuff.
George Is beaming with delight as his car does not appear to burn much oil at all, and his used oil analysis are looking spectactular. He's become an online celebrity.
299K miles
John's Car blows a rod and is sent to salvage.
George Is beaming with delight because the extra 3500$ he's spent on his car buying the best oil has paid off and he's won the contest... as he commutes to work he takes his camera along and snaps a picture of the 300K mile roll-over. While lining up the camera he takes his eyes off the road and read-ends a semi, totalling the vehicle.
Ironic isn't it.
The End.
The moral of the story is... lots of great info.. just don't get too carried away.
