The right oil

Hello,I have had many vw rabbit diesels and would run rottella 15w40 in them. I recently purchased a 03 jetta tdi wagon w 168k on the clock and was serviced at vw from day one. I am a little far from the vw dealer and wondered what to run for a 5w40 oil in it. 1 valvoline synpower fullsynthetic 5w40 euroformula
API SERVICE SM/SL,CF
ACEA A3/B3,A3/B4,C3 SERVICES
VW502.00/505.00/505.01
Or Rottella T6

I've seen a lot of people run Rotella T6 5w-40 in these cars with good results.

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 would probably also work well.

In Connecticut I wouldn't run 15w40. Too thick when it's cold.

Rotella T6 isn't technically VW certified but it is still excellent.

+1; I did last fall with Delo15W-40, and it was quite painful @ 10F. It quickly was replaced

There is obviously NO one oil for every car in every climate.
The oil I use here in Florida, where it's always nice to just plain HOT, would not work at all in the northern states where it gets really COLD in winter.
I don't just drive my car to the store for groceries, like many my age (67) but I do a lot of off-road driving and I even pull a heavy drag, to maintain my sand road. I've seen coolant temps up to 230°F, while pulling my road-drag. So I want an oil that I know, from years of experience with it, will hang in there during the times of greatest stress on the engine. I and many of my neighbors use only Castrol GTX, 20W50, and we change it every 3k miles. The oil I drain out of my engine still looks good and I give it to a neighbor to use around his place in various engines. I keep some for general lube around my shop and use it in my lawn mower and chain saw.
It never goes to waste!

We're talking about a very specific engine (2003 VW turbo diesel). Mobil 1 0w40 (and other 0w40s) is/are one of the few oils that works great in all temps for the factory 10K mile interval.

Yes and over at TDIclub Rotella T6 is often recommended. If it can be run in a turbo diesel pickup it will do just fine in his VW. I've run it during the summer in my wife's 06 Golf (2.slow). As for that 10k mi/1yr drain VW recommends... unless I was doing a at least 50% of my driving at highway speeds I would never go that long. My wife's car sees 6mo OCIs since its mostly in town.

So OP, use the T6 with confidence if you choose. It seems to show very good results with the VW enthusiast community.

Is it a pumpe dusse/unit injector engine?

If it is and you are on fixed interval servicing you will need to use an oil approved to VW505.01 spec which is usually either 5w-40 or 5w30.

if it's a standard TDi then it's VW505.00 which a lot more 5w-40's are approved for
