Of course, I'm not sure we have data that indicates WHY the 21% is off the road, but I'm sure accidents claim them in similar numbers, save for maybe Honda Civics with the "Park Bench" aerodynamics package

I know both the Contour and the Prizm need timing belt changes

Many a person will take their vehicle into the toyota or honda dealer and not bat an eyelash at their required 24, 36, 48k, etc. service... at the same time, people think theyre gtting ripped off when their domestic vehicle dealer tells them that their diff fluid or transmission fluid should be changed 3yr/36k.

When I get parts for my 1980's GM's the parts are almost always from Canada or U.S.

There was a claim made by a reputable member here who worked service counter at a combo dealer. He said Honda ECUs come back bad a few a year, but he fills a coupla pallets with bad GM ECUs that will be shipped back to mfg. Nothing in my experience would contradict that. I think the GM intake gasket issue hovers like a dark cloud over discussions like this.

I assume most new cars are pretty reliable. To me, it's the LEVEL of service the car provides during it's life. That includes, safety, performance and comfort. Also, longevity is more closely related to reliability, how well the interior, paint and mechanicals hold up in the long run.
Bottom line is that who cares about some junk wagon if it drives and looks horrible, plus is unsafe....if it is "reliable". Cavalier comes to mind. I guess I tend to agree w/FTM, "reliability" is overrated.

Cavaliers are the most rust prone junk I've ever owned. I'm going to try to get another car in a couple years, but never again will I get a throwaway chevy econobox. I'd think about a G6 or a Fusion maybe. Time and (lack of) money will tell.
