The Prius need for speed

I loved that episode!!

Had an annoying experience last night. Driving home from dinner in my Mustang, there is a cloverleaf on-ramp. the turn is about 270 degrees to the right dropping about 30 feet in height gradually. I tend to um speed, but the portion of the on-ramp on the freeway is very short, so its a safety thing to have speed built up. I get to the turn out portion when my steering wheel is starting to go straight and there is a Prius slowing down on the on-ramp with the freeway completely clear. They were actually on the brakes slowing down to around 30mph, the speed limit is 65mph. Once i checked the mirrors and I was clear I shot around them. What is really unsafe is the freeway before this on-ramp is 3 lanes and during the on-ramp narrows to 2 lanes. One thing I did notice was their gas fill door was open and the gas cap was flapping the breeze.

That episode was great! What bothers me is that many VW Diesel owners act the same way. Brapppp! Ahh! That smelled good!

Anyway, I don't see any Prius drivers drive too fast. The only thing I notice is they they like to have more bumper stickers.

Yeah I see them flying all the time.

I was following one in my friends diesel Mercedes at about 85 once and I said to him, you know this car is probably getting better mileage than that Prius at 85....

Prius will do circa 40 MPG at that speed. How about your diesel?

Just followed one home yesterday on the toll road, idjit driver ran from 70-80 mph, hogged the left lane no matter what, and had the windows down on a 90+ degree day.

Not the CAR'S fault!

The point is? One nice thing about my TDi is that I can drive fast--and still get high mpg's. Just not as high if I were to drive slow(er). Their car, they can drive however they want.

I have two-three coworkers with Prii. They could care less about the enviroment. They car about cost/mile, or at least cost at the pump. I'm sure they have no problems driving the car at breakneck speeds if they want to (although I get the impression they are more apt to get the last mpg out of it).

Finally, does a Prius have the same throttle pedal programming as my Camry? That darn thing has all of the tip-in located in probably the first 10% of the pedal. As a result it goes like scat. It honestly does enjoy cruising at 80+.

They have a feeling of entitlement. A "look at me" need for attention. My horn vibrates right though the thin shell, outta my way!

Haters gonna hate. Speeders gonna speed.

You get passed by Prii (Pree-I) and notice it, but also get passed by everything else and it doesn't register. There are a lot of other slow drivers that aren't in a Prius and I guess those don't register either.

BTW, it's a speed LIMIT, not speed MANDATORY. I structure my life to not have to be in a hurry. I bet a lot of speeders don't have a clue why they speed, they just do it out of habit. OTOH, they likely don't plan well and HAVE to mash the gas mindlessly.

There is a local Prius owner I see regularly on the way to work. I drive fast, but he is faster. He must perform a maximum effort acceleration at every stoplight. As I really have to make my Jag work to keep up. It's rather funny. Once on 95, he's off into the HOV lane and "gone".

Owning a prius has it's advantages.

Amen brother, same here!!

I recently talked to a Prius owner, I asked him what fuel economy he was getting...he said about 38-39mpgUS....I just nodded...

Pffffttt...I was laughing inside...I didn't have the heart to tell him I was on my 18th consecutive tank of 42mpgUS or higher....heck my lifetime average is higher than that.

Just because you bought a fuel efficient car doesn't mean it is automatically going to get better fuel economy. People are funny.

Never really noticed a Prius speeding. I got passed on the highway by one once, but then 10 minutes later it was in the right lane doing 55 mph.

I have to agree with 440Magnum. Around here its always the kids with the German cars who think they imported part of the Autobahn. I was in the center lane doing 75 in my Cherokee following traffic, and this guy in an Audi A4 passed me doing at least 100 mph weaving in and out of cars. I only saw him for a few seconds and he was gone. Typical "pimped" out German car with the black wheels, smoked tail lights, and a European front license plate but CT rear license plate. Never understood the reasoning behind the license plates by the way.

I also got passed by a college girl in a Mercedes on the same stretch of highway. I was in the center lane doing about 80 mph, and she flew by me. She was also talking on the phone. She looked like she was 15, not sure how she could afford that car.

Not sure about you guys, but I'd take a Prius doing slightly under the speed limit over these crazy kids any day. I'm no perfect driver, but I can't believe how irresponsible people my age are.

Right, but if he drove your Corolla the way he drives his Prius, I'm sure he'd get a lot less than 42 MPG.

Sometimes it's fun to drive a slow car fast and still get good (not great) MPG.

IMHO, this and similar threads started by Prius haters here on BITOG are ridiculous and amount to stereotyping (the previous one was about how slow Prius drivers are though).

I never started a thread about how slow big trucks and SUV go now in my parts (I guess they try to save on fuel) and I don't recall other threads started about stereotyping one class of drivers vs another.

IMHO, this is not what BITOG should be about.

I recently started a thread showing how my daughter consistently gets 40MPG while I get 60 MPG in the same city driving service.
My wife is somewhere in between.

Everyone knows MPG is driver dependent. So, what's new here?

Whenever I see one of these posts I think there are two possibilities:

1) There really is a trend wherever the poster is.
2) The poster is for whatever reason specifically noticing the annoying behavior in a particular class of vehicles, but hasn't made any scientific observations as to whether there really is a trend.

I usually assume 2. But there is at least ONE version of that statement that I know is, or at least was true, especially back in the 90s: "Whenever I see a Volvo on the road, the driver has a higher than average chance of being completely incompetent."

There are raging scientific debates about whether pre-Ford Volvo safety features CAUSED people to drive poorly, or ATTRACTED poor drivers. Now that they have probably found the Higgs Boson, the Volvo Attractor is the one great remaining undiscovered particle of the universe. ;-)

It depends. Hybrids generally lose their advantage over similar-sized conventional cars in sustained highway driving. I'm pretty certain almost ANY driver would do better in the Corolla on a 1000-mile all highway trip than they would in the Prius.

Doubtful. Similar sized engine, but more slippery. Plus, it can probably coast better. And, there is still some braking to be done on the highway (merging, stopping for gas, etc). What is the current Prius ratings? I'm 99% sure the highway rating is still above the Corolla's rating.

My C does about 48mpg on the highway. A little less on a fast highway.

Today's fill up got me 53.41 mpg, mostly city. Best tank so far is 58.1, most all city.

The same driving in my previous CRX would get me a high of about 46 hwy, and between 35-39 mostly city.

A vehicle is only a transportation tool. As with any tool, it's the user that makes the difference.

I agree. Around here, they are doing 80-85 on metro highways, or 10 MPH under on side streets (want to avoid using gas). I hate 'em all
