The plus and minus of making your own burgers at home.

Fine if you making a bunch for a crowd, but too much hassle for one burger to drag out the grill from the basement. Maybe twice a year when I get an itch for one. Not to mention I'm trying to cut down on food like that.
People who grill often don't keep it in the basement but on the back porch/yard. Gas grill can be ready in about 10 mins. Plus if you don't have a proper range hood (I don't myself and it annoys me to no end) then you don't have to grill in the house with a fan in the kitchen window sucking out the smell.

I want to see what others say first. Oh I can only think of one minus.
Plus: Lower cost because not only are you less likely to have all the ingredients to build a great burger you're probably not going to grind your own mix. You can go as lean as you want.

Minus: It's mostly the mix which is the difference between a good vs great burger. Unless you have a proper range hood it's kind of a pain to make a "smash burger".

We get farm fresh ground beef right off the farm. Sometimes Amish. The meat is so much better and it helps the local farmers. I don't like to buy meat from other countries.

Don't want to clutter up the porch for something I only may use a couple times a year.
Why limit your grilling to burgers? There is a whole world of barbecue cookery - skewers of chicken, rotisserie chicken, skewers of beef, roast beef - indirect heat or rotisseried, sausages, fish in a number of ways, etc. You can even make pizza on a gas grill (though we haven't tried that yet).

Grilling is ideal for hot days when you don't want to heat up the kitchen.

And it works well on cold days too. When we got our first grill we were melting the snow off before we could start cooking.

My grill is kept outside...we grill probably 4-5 times a week in summer, and 2-3 times a week in winter. I grill turkey burgers about once a week.

What "food like that" are you trying to cut down on?

96% ground beef or turkey is...per 0.25lb

~140 calories
~25g protein
~4g fat (1-2g sat. fat)
~63mg cholest
0 carbs...

Why would you avoid that?

Sure those numbers are right? McDonalds shows four times as much calories and fat in a 1/4 pounder. I know they don't use the same grade of beef, but still, 4 times as much bad stuff?

Yup, I'm sure those are right. I will say those numbers are for the meat only. You will have to add for the bun, and whatever else you put on it. I usually eat mine without the bun at home (or a thin whole wheat bun), and a pile of veggies. So little or no additional calories, etc.

Pros: I get to throw an over easy egg on top, if you haven't you need to, along with some hot sauce.

Cons: Work lol

I just got a flat top insert for my propane grill and made "semi" smash burgers because my wife's been wanting thinner burgers. Also did a full change on the mixture. Everyone enjoyed them, nice to put that crust on them and not lose the juice.

85/15 is still only

Cal 241
Protein 21g
Fat 17g
Chol 76mg

Not saying you should do it daily, but it's really not bad.

I know this one has to be OFF THE CHARTS in fats and every other thing bad for you but every now and then the wife and I can not help it and we end up in one of those Five Guys Burger joints! The tough part about going in there is avoiding the freshest and IMHO best french fries you can find. We do order the small burgers. If you order a large its as big as your face! LoL

We often cook turkey burgers at home inside and outside on grill. Wife finds Walmart has a good brand she buys.

we have made homemade burgers from our bulk beef order for years. Once in a while we get pre-made ones from the butcher with our order of beef. Always grilled on a Weber kettle over Kingsford coals with a cold Miller Lite or Killian's. Sounds refreshing, yes, yes it was just last night!

Just my $0.02

My son and grandson Deer hunt . I always have a freezer full of ground Deer meat and smoked sausage . I use the ground Deer meat for burgers , meatballs , meat loaf , etc. I don't remember the last time I bought ground beef .
