LOL. I was laughing at this entire post. Especially the part about your daughter. My dad was the premier energy miser back in the day and this post reminded me of him.

The plastic utensil basket reminded me of my dad's condiment/utensil drawer when I was a kid.

I never thought about the razor refills on ebay. Thanks for the tip!

Hey, at least the Ol' Roy is made in the U.S. You can take solace in that.

I like this thread.

I save money by:

-Living with my girlfriend (all bills cut in half)
-Renting an apt (no taxes, maintenance, etc)
-Living in an apt that includes hot water, heat(radiators), and garbage.
-Driving a car that's paid for
-Not buying all the newest electronic gadgets
-Very little car maintenance cost (only pay for parts, at a discount)
-Knowing when to spend more money on higher priced items that will last longer
-Taking lunch to work
-Entertaining at home on the weekends (grilling, drinks, etc)
-Learning to cook so I can still eat gourmet food for cheap
-Eating lots of vegetables (vegetables are cheap)
-"Vacations" consist of going to my parents house or staying at friends houses in various cities around the US
-Make coffee at home
-Use a PUR pitcher, no more expensive bottled water
-Drink lots of FREE water at work instead of soda

let me add more.. buy free after rebate items at walgreens, cvs, rite aid. check their weekly ads. I just picked up a free 3 way bulb, generic brita filter, Pert plus shampoo. I've picked up in the past FAR frutus hair gel, toothpaste, bodywash, band aids. I'm starting to take extra ketchup, mustard, and taco sauce packets from fast food joints for home while eating off the dollar menu... I use a prepaid T mobile cell phone. Started cutting sunday coupons out. buying walmart gas with a 3 cent gift card (while earning 5% on my GM card) I'm stopping UOAs after I finish my last 3 prepaid kits. Looking for sales, clothes shopping at TJ Maxx, buying Lean cruisine tv dinners for lunch at kroger sale for $1.50 a box. Buying more generic food at walmart.

I can only dream of that... until the missus gets a job...

Which one is that? My father in law is in the recycle business and they have to buy battery at around 20c a pound. This would make some serious money.

VIP discount auto gives the $5 battery cards.

Used to be unlimited; recently 3 per day limit.

Was at the local grocery and bought some pork for dinner. A $1 off pork coupon spat out the context-sensitive cash register ticket machine.

Took my groceries out to the car, went back inside, found a tray with $1.02 worth of pork. Presented my coupon and two pennies. It rang through... and I got another coupon.

This continued until I was running late for work.

Last year, I bought a used set of 'store brand' tires from some guy off the internet in my area. No idea how old the actually were, had been sitting int he back of a jeep for 'a while'.

Got a nail in one this weekend, and took the tire to a branch of this store, and got it patched for free!

I think being cheapskate is good if you have time. There are 2 dozen other projects in my house that I have been dragging on for 2 months. Going to school part time and have a wife that work 1 hr away is not easy to make time to save money. But still, I'll put in my recent update:

1) Learn to bargain for large purchase. Got piano, car, stuff animal etc for cheap. You kind of have to buy these if you are me (wife plays piano, need a car, and have to give her a gift once in a while). Pay it up front, and your life will be much easier later.

2) Buy good quality material for cooking, you will love your own food better and eat out less. Good investment

3) Consolidate insurance, saving accounts, combine trips, etc. You know how it goes.

4) Learn a new skill that makes you more money. Taking classes at the state university part time (company paid for) land me a better job that pays 20% more, every other year, so the time you spend here beats the return on you spending to mount your own tires, cooking your own food when you are busy, brewing your own beer (just don't drink beer), shopping for cheap clothes, etc.

5) Most important, marry a cheapskate just like you, that will save you more than anything else in life.

My wife came by my workplace for lunch. We went to a nice Italian place on the west side of town. With a BOGOF coupon and no drinks (water only), lunch came to $6.79 + tax for two people. Buffet-sytle, but very good. Baked ziti...mmm...you name it, it's all home-cooked. Hard to beat homemade Italian fare.

Heck, two happy meals for kids are more than we paid for two adults for lunch today.

I miss this place called CiCi's. It is a 4.95 pizza buffet all day long place. Not homemade, but they have a buffalo wing pizza that is to die for. You got a steal on homemade italian food for the price you paid! Since I moved to a town with only 8300 people, my restaurant choices are severely limited.

Oh WOW, they do? I haven't been to a CiCi's in three years, but now I'll have to go look!!

In this weather I chill my ice cubes and groceries outside before putting them in the refrigerator to save on electricity.

I just removed the non-listed phone number off my phone service to save a dollar a month.
