The Motorcraft FL400S just got smaller?

I noticed all the new batches of FL400S Motorcraft filters are about an inch shorter now. First of all, why was this done? And secondly, will this adversely affect older vehicles that used the old size?

It's happening industry wide. When I first saw your post, I thought about the 820 getting smaller because of space limitations. Right off hand, I can't think of a 400 application that needs to be shortened.
It could be a cost-cutting measure.

That's what I figure. I wonder if losing an inch will hurt the amount of volume the filter can pass. At least the thread and gasket diameter are the same as the FL300 and Fl1A so I can use those in its place if I have to.

Someone here (Fordiesel maybe?) posted pix of a new shorter 820S cut open and showed that more media was added to make up for the smaller size. Hopefully that's what happened with the 400S.

Yep, scroll to Fordiesel69 and read his positive comments. Here's the specs on the new 820.

Motorcraft seems to do things right when it comes to parts, so hopefully they did the same with the 400.

Yes, the outside of a filter tells you nothing about how much media it has. And a tape measure tells you nothing about the quality of the media.

I would not say it is industry wide

It is to bad he did not include any pics in his post.

You must be referring to a dissected view of the new filter. Prehaps, like myself he doesn't have picture posting skills, or perhaps even a digital camera.

While pics would have been nice, his description seemed fairly detailed, eg., 13 extra pleats, so I'll take him at his word. But, that's just me.

As for the Motorcraft parts, after reading about their parts here(BITOG), from spark plugs, to oil filters, to motor oil, Motorcraft products are generally regarded as top quality.

I am not saying what he said was wrong, or that I do not believe him. Nor anything bad about Motorcraft parts, I like them. I just think it would be interesting to compare the new and old size filter. If I could find a old size 820S I would do it but I can only find the new size.

I called FoMoCo today, and they had no idea about the change, or why they did it. Their only comment was that they wouldn't have done anything that would make it unsafe for use on their vehicles.
Basically they had no info. This suprised me as I called the number on the Motorcraft parts website.

I want to start using an FL1A or FL300 in place of the FL400S on my cars as they will fit. My only concern is that the FL1A and FL300 do not have silicone drainback valves, they have the usual rubber ones. How crucial is it that the filters have that?

They work fine at first. I think that depends on how long you run the filter. I am about to abandon my 3 month intervals. I have never had problems with the black ones in that short of a time. Even rubber that has hardened with age, may still be flexible enough to seal when you shut down hot. If you do a lot of short trips and run the filter a long time, you may have more need for the silicone.

How long is your average OCI? If it's ~5k you should be good to go. If you run extended OCI's the silicone adbv would be more reliable. That said, may have run the nitrile with no issues for longer than 5k. If your vehicle seems more susceptible to start up rattle the silicone would be better. Don't think it would hurt to try an MC filter using nitrile though.

That 80% efficency at 20 microns rating seems really low. That's worse than Fram, supertech and not to mention Purolator Classic. I don't get why Motorcraft would spec such a low efficiency. I don't think I would run a filter with that low of effciency. Heck people are paying a couple dollars more for P1 to gain 2-3% more efficency, and the motorcrafts are down 16% from a purolator classic
