We took the car west on vacation in 2007 while still under warranty. We traveled far enough to be NOT under warranty anymore.
With the warranty expired by 36 miles, the speedometer and entire instrument cluster went nonfunctional coming down the west side of the Rockies with my 15 1/2 year old son behind the wheel getting some driving experience with mom and dad in the car. He pulled over and let dad drive. I pulled into Phoenix AZ, got mom and kids into a Hotel, and took the car a few blocks up the street to a local GM dealer; dropped it off for service and rented a car. 3 days and $2700 later, my car is fixed at the dealer. I picked it up, drove the few blocks to the Hotel, shut the key off. Don't remember why, but I tried to restart the car. Ignition switch jammed. Had car towed back to dealer, spent another $700.
Came home to St. Louis, almost exactly a year later the same switch died AGAIN. Towed to local dealer, replaced switch again. They called dealer in AZ who verified date I purchased new switch, and this time I paid only for "labor," about $200.
I recently started getting letters from GM (local dealer) that my car is under factory recall, it is "dangerous" to drive, and I need to bring it in for FREE parts and installation of an ignition switch. I called the dealer and asked them to just give me a check for $700. I was told "sorry" all the factory authorizes us to do is replace switches.
And people wonder why some of us call them Stealerships?
I have the receipt from the dealer in AZ, and I would go see an attorney, but suing General Motors?
How many miles was on the car when you bought it new? When I was a mechanic at a Honda dealer*, if the car was sold new with say 115 miles worth of test...drives on it, that was added to the warranty.
Keep that in mind people, you never know.
* Am now a semi mech at a bussiness where my union tells me who to vote for.
That story looked like something made up anyways. No way would an instrument cluster cost that much. I would have to see receipts to believe it, and even then I would buy a 100 dollar GPS to use as a speedo until I got home. A fool and his money... BTW the union tells you how to vote for a very good reason...
