The gas F150 vs Lightning

This is one of the advantages of EVs. Operations and maintenance are far less expensive than gas. Everyone's mind instantly goes to battery replacement costs, but the reality is that in most cases, if there's an issue with the battery it will be discovered within the warranty period. If the battery is good enough to go 100,000 miles, it's good enough to go far more than that. Consider it an extended shakedown period. Now, contrast that with the Ecoboost, with phasers and 10 speed transmissions failing both inside and outside the warranty period.
 
I think it's chunked a motor, not sure yet. It was making terrible noises and then it wouldn't move anymore. I had it towed by roadside assistance on Friday. Thankfully my wife got to where she was going and wasn't inconvenienced.

It's had a small whine since new. We took it back previously and told them it shouldn't make these noises, and that my Lightning was dead silent. They said they couldn't find an issue. Well, we found an issue.
What year? How many miles?
 
Automatic transmissions are one of the main reasons I tried an EV in the first place. Was a die-hard manual driver. I owned a couple ZF 8-speeds and those are still really bad, despite being the “best”.

Once I went direct-drive and electric motors, with massive, instant torque, it was obvious to me I’d never buy an automatic transmission again. EV or manual only.
I can understand that although I'm not quite that far with it. I'm fine with ICE still. I finally drove a Model 3P last week for the first time. Was my first time driving an EV. holy moly was it smooth and fast. Incredible.
 
Per some comments I read on Reddit, I tried Sport mode, and the shifting is much better and fully sequential. However, it holds the RPMs high a lot, which I can't think is great for economy. Just puttering around at 35, it's holding the engine about 2200 RPMs, whereas in normal mode it was dropping to 1400. But it definitely is better in traffic, no early shifting in 1st and no lag.
 
Next time kindly ask for an F-250 with the 6 speed. None of those compromises exist.

The 6R80/6.2 combo is hard to beat. Ideally, I'd like to drive an EV around town for daily use and keep an older Super Duty around with the 6 speed for truck stuff. We're interested in buying a travel trailer to go to the coast, for example. I'd need a crew cab though.
 
Well, I took the F150 back to the dealership and got an Explorer loaner instead.

It was a big step up for my wife, daughter (10) and grandson (8) to get in and out of the F150 with no running boards. And my wife's grandmother is in town from Brazil (96) and she's staying with us this weekend as her 70 something kids (one local, one also in town from Brazil) are going on a cruise without her. I think I would probably have had to lift her up into the F150.

As noted elsewhere I'm over mileage on my Lightning lease so I'm trying to drive it as little as possible. We will use the Explorer as much as we can until the Mach-E is fixed.

The Explorer is an Active trim with the 2.3 EB. So far I think I like it a little better than the F150 from an interior bits standpoint, it's got a power seat and I put it all the way down and headroom/legroom are good for me at 6'7". Has auto climate control also, which was missed on the F150.

I only drove it about 8/10 of a mile from the dealership to my office, so the mileage is yet to be seen, but the power seems more than adequate. I didn't really notice the 10 speed so much on this one, but I know it has a 10 speed.

It has the Google Automotive interface, which I wasn't aware Ford was doing, but being an Android guy, it's fine with me. I used the built in Google Maps to get back to the office, but when I got to the parking garage, I changed it to Android Auto by joining my phone to it. Not sure if it supports Apple Carplay, guess I'll find out later. I carry a work iPhone also, can try it out.
 
I don't understand what's so difficult about programming a transmission or proper throttle linearity to just work from OEM's? It's almost as if they're devolpment test drivers are numb or the manufactures just say that's good enough.

My previous 15 Tacoma tried to get to the highest gear possible as soon as possible, hunted like crazy at the sight of a hill on the interstate and throttle was like nothing for the first 25% and then it'd ramp up quickly making it sometimes jerky and difficult off road or on snow. After a tune, the truck really shifted like it should have originally and throttle response was actually linear.

Same goes for our Subaru Ascent. Torque converter locks up at 17-20mph under normal acceleration and it feels like you let off the throttle, you have to tip in a little more to maintain acceleration which then unlocks the TCC and continues the dance. Then when you near 50% throttle, Subaru felt the need to give you fake gear ratios. Nobody is asking for fake jerky gear changes, just let the CVT do what it's supposed to and it'd be smoother with possibly better economy! This was even worse before tuning with COBB that smoothed out the throttle response.

My 23 F150 isn't bad, but there is a lot of room for improvement. I occasionally get rough downshifts and odd upshifts. Skipping 2nd gear going from 1st to 3rd can be a bit jerky too. According to everyone I've talked to, most tuning companies have figured out how to make the 10r80 behave, plus add a good boost in power. I'll probably tune it in the future.

It's for MPG. Opening the throttle more instead of increasing RPM reduces both pumping losses and friction to improve mpg.

I wonder how they test that? My Tacoma fuel economy improved by 1-2mpg consistently across the board after the tune. Our Ascent tune had no effect on fuel mileage, though throttle response is way smoother and it's a good bit peppier deeper into the throttle.

Manuacturers all use the EPA standard tests for these things.

Everyone that gets the GM 8 speed tune says it changes everything for the better. Huge improvement.
