My "sailing partner to be" went to look at a boat. The owner was an old friend and as my sailing partner said, they drank a bunch of wine. He bought the boat.
That boat was terrible. The hull was overweight, the wetted surface was rough, and the sails were blown out. We could only win in our class when there was a lot of wind. But we learned to work together.
When we got new sails the next year we won a lot more races. And when we got a new hull the year after that we really cleaned up. So it worked out fine in the end.
