"The Club": Worth keeping?

Years ago, when pterodactyls soared above the earth and we never had no Innernet, I purchased a Club (then, about $30) for the steering wheel of my Olds Cutlass, and faithfully used it. After I moved to Denver, I got bored with the whoel business of putting it on and taking it off -- and my Mercedes' steering wheels were too big to use it easily.

Well, in cleaning out my kitchen closet today, I found it, with the two working keys still attached. I was going to dump it, but then I said, "The Brain Trust at BItOG will know." Is it worth keeping and using as a minor deterrent?

It fits on the Buick. Thoughts?

No, I a car thief wants your car he will get it. The club will make no difference. You can however keep it in the car as a personal protection device. They don't call it "The Club" for nothing.

Keep it. I use mine for bleeding brakes. When I work on the cars alone, I pump the brake for bleeding and hold the pedal down by extending and locking the club between the seat/seatframe and pedal. Work pis-sah.

To defeat the Club, all you need a a hack saw to cut the steering wheel, not the club.

I never thought of that until I saw a demo on TV a few years ago.

I bought one during my divorce. We were living about a block from each other. The soon to be ex thought nothing of swiping the car I had (the larger of our two). She didn't swap cars, she just took mine, and left me on foot.

The club stopped that bit of indiscretion. Much cheaper than having the car rekeyed. Might keep your teens from joyriding in your pride and joy also.

I've got a club and use it religiously on my E30, even 'though a few minutes with an allen key would defeat it easily.

About 15 years ago I had a Car with a V-8 and 3" exhaust parked O/S my bedroom window, arguing that nobody could break into it and I'd not hear.

Still used a "crooklock" connecting the steering wheel with the clutch pedal.

Came out one morning and the doors were all open, and wiring half out of the dash. The crooklock must have been just enough deterrent to stop some low lifes/joyriders.

I keep The Club in my 4Runner and I use it in high theft areas. One of them is the Ala Moana Shopping Mall (the biggest open air mall in the world) and I get real paranoid about parking my truck there. I bought it in 93 and I would use it everywhere I go. Now it's just that and a good weapon next to the bolo knife.

I was really being facious; car theft is not a big problem where I live. Although I expect theives who are not looking for cars to sell/part out will take whatever is the easiest to steal. I think the old Chryslers were very easy to steal IRRC..

I bought one used at a flea market for $5. I wanted to lock it on a friends basketball hoop but it wouldn't fit. Piece of junk.

One thought...if you ever do have an altercation with a would be carjacker and use the bolo knife you can be charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon or CCW if it is found on your person. The attacker can also sue you for using it on him and it makes you appear as a violent dangerous knife wielding individual in court. If you beat him senseless with the club you were simply defending yourself with a non-weapon anti-theft device that happened to be in the car at the time and you were so frightened you just picked up the first thing in sight to defend yourself. No malice. No premeditation. No weapon.

I use the Master Lock brand of club. I bought it when my keys and remote were stolen. It would have cost $800 for the dealer to re-key my doors and ignition.

Its worthless. The steering wheel is made of very soft material for crash safety so you can cut it off with the saw blade of a Swiss Army knife. A rabbit's foot would deter theft just as well.
