The Boss is a Hog

Was in Pep Boys today to see if they had the new Purolators and they did have a few of the Boss'. Picked one up even though I just changed the oil in my Tacoma and the Cub Cadet mower which both take the same filter. Looks like a nicely constructed filter (on the outside anyway). The big surprise was how heavy these are, yes it's a Boss Hog. Compared to the new Supertech ST3614, the Boss is over 4 ounces heavier.

The Super Tech filter should be compared to the PC Classic....in which case I'd use the Super Tech ....at least it hasn't been known to TEAR....

I have a six-pack of Fram Ultra Synthetics on their way. I was only making a comparison of the weight difference between these two. My BIL picked up a Fram Synthetic for his street rod and also remarked that the Boss was heavier than his XG5 which is a much larger filter.

The old ones had oval holes for this series I believe. The base gasket looks beefy. I measured the ST and Ultra cans as the same thickness, .013-.014". The Boss may be .017-.018" like the Bosch D+, which may explain some of the weight.

I put one of the new Boss filters on my Fiesta at the last oil change & I have one to go on one of the 6.2Ls at the next oil change. The weight was definitely something I noticed. I'm sure they are pretty good filters but I would prefer a higher effeciency rating - if it even matters.

I wouldnt mind giving these a try as long as they changed the ADBV's. Towards the end of their last run, those started tearing too!

After reading your comment (thank you) and reading THIS thread, I decided to take a closer look at the new Boss. There is one inlet hole that in fact is cutting into the ADBV. You can see in the picture that there are two bulges where the inside sharp edge of the hole is cutting the silicone. I verified these are cuts by pressing slightly on the silicone at the base of the bulges and the cuts become clearly visible. Thought I'd like to give this one a try but now it's going back to Pep Boys.

The two piece baseplate has the outside plate going into the holes of the heavy plate below it. I have seen where the holes have the thin silvery plate sticking out like you show. I think you explained cut Purolator ADBVs.
The Bosch I posted recently has a different ADBV and is completely without this problem. Also on the Bosch the silver plate only went part way into the round holes, as can be seen. This 3614 type model you show used to have the oval holes. I was hoping it had the better ADBV too, but is doesn't. This picture shows the different style ADBV Puro uses, and the holes have the silver plate only going in a little ways. The silver plate helps round the corner and lessens friction through the holes is what I think they were after. I have no problem using this type which is found on the smaller diameter filters.

Unfortunately yes. There's no doubt, after seeing the ADBV tears in other threads, that Purolator has built this problem into their new filters as well. Chances are the valve will stay together and never cause a problem but I don't want to take a chance on a piece breaking off, flowing through the bypass valve and into my engine.

funflyer - since this is on the inlet side of the filter, would not the filter catch any silicone cuttings in the filter? Wouldn't this only cause a loss in anti drain back function?

This filter has the bypass on the opposite end. If a large enough piece of the silicone ADBV tore off it might not be caught in the pleats so I don't think I'd take a chance on a bypass event letting this piece flow out into the engine.

Must be the louvered center tube contributing to the greater weight - no loss of metal punching all those center tube holes!

Tearing ADBV's = not good. I'll have to check my stash of PSL's once that box is located & opened . . .

One reason for Boss is a Hog, noticed the baseplates are different weight just by hand. Same model filter. Wix made 2.7 oz vs Puro made 4.1 oz. The Puro base has a longer thread too. Also this type Purolator has an excellent ADBV, maybe the best I have seen. I would buy the Boss Hog in this type, having the fleece element and all that. Never the type shown though, for the reason shown.
