Held a Purolator Boss yesterday

The old Puro cans have had the new center tube since July 2015.

The only filter I've ever had a problem with was NAPA branded Wix. The gasket was too thin. As I was tightening by hand, I could feel the base plate making contact with the mounting surface. As I didn't like that feeling, concerned I was distorting the gasket, I backed off and re tightened to just short of contact. Noticed oil drops the first day. Back up on the ramps and removed the filter, replaced with a P1. On more careful examination - either the gasket was too thin, or the channel it fit into was too deep - but it had no hope of ever sealing the filter to the mounting surface.

I know that, older stock I'm stocking up on.
 
Im talking about the shop although i sold the business i will be helping him out for the next few months. We knew each other for a long time.
 
I don't like those small oil holes in the center tube on the new purolators either.. But i would not stock up on the old purolator synthetic i would look for a better quality filter like a Wix or fram ultra.
 
I've got one of the blue can synthetics on the Jeep now. I'm tempted to pick up a couple more, as they seem to be good enough in terms of not tearing or anything and the grippy stuff is nice. That'll at least give me a little time to decide what filter I want to switch to next.
 
Thicker shell and plate...for what???

No reason it needs to be any thicker or heavier than what the OEM uses. I'd rather see the $ spent on efficiency, capacity & flow instead of steel I don't need and a pretty box/label.

BOSS = Basic Old Stinky Stuff
 
Unless you race those Hondas that allegedly warp their cans due to oil heat, or have a Ford truck* you off-road severely, I would not worry.


*that comment was a playful jab at noticing this on a Ford. I'm fairly certain they never encounter death by filter strike lol.:

 
I know some have complained that the P1 cans used to be some of the thinnest out there, so maybe they made these thicker to stave off those complaints?

I would rather have larger holes in the center tube as well. I looked inside the Mobil 1 oil filter (M1-104) and it has small holes too. Looks like the same size slits as the Purolator.

That test has a repeatability of 3.67% @ 1-sigma.

I hereby demote "The Boss" to Assistant Manager until Puro coughs up real performance specs, and I will personally take over a building in Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon until Puro relents. (Oh, wait, there may be current occupants there now with a diff agenda...)
 
I've used Purolators for years but did not know about the recent tearing issues.

It also sounds like they are being a bit deceptive and incomplete in regard to technical specs.

If I was going to stop using them, does a consensus exist out there for a super high quality filter with specs to back it up?

Mobil 1?
Bosch?
Motorcraft?
Mazda OEM?

Fram Ultra, with 2nd choice Fram ToughGaurd, they are open with their specs to 4548-12.

Wire backed media, all synthetic fibers. Traps more dirt and filters fine doo-doo out. Silicon ADBV too.

My brother has a 1997 Civic, and he bought a Boss yesterday to use on the oil change. I still have couple of the Mobil 1 filters in the filter stash. We compared the two. Based on weight alone, the Boss is heavier than the Mobil 1.

I know weight isn't everything, filtration is the key thing. It will be interesting to see how it does.

My brother wants to do a used oil analysis at the end of the oil change. So, we will see.


If the Boss is heavier than the M1....it must be darn heavy then.

It's sad. Purolator used to list the microns for the oil filters. I think it was 99.9% at 20 microns for the Pureone, and 99.9% at 25 microns for the Synthetic.

With the redesigned filters and website, it is a lot of marketing without much technical details.

"99% Dirt Removal Power", good marketing, it seems like something a washing machine maker would say.

It is, I thought the M1 had good weight to it, but, the Boss is even more so.
