The Blue Angels

Last October I tried for the first time the movie feature in my still camera and shot some footage when the Blue Angels performed here in San Francisco during Fleet Week. Here's some stuff that I edited together. By the way, Fat Albert, the Blue Angels' C-130 support plane, a spectacular bird, is almost 40 years old as far as I know. The pilot who was unfortunately killed during a performance last Saturday was not flying during Fleet Week.

Very good video. Music matches the video. What camera did you use to record it? My digital camera (Canon PowerShot) doesn't pick sound as well.

I used a Fuji Finepix S9000 -- a camera that is utterly unsuitable for any action stuff, mostly due to a non-optical viewfinder (monitor with slow refreshing rate) and a much too slow AF. It's pretty good for nonmoving subjects, though, and it's very good for stills. I shoot 90% of my digital hobby junk with that camera simply out of convenience.

For a first try it's okay, I guess. I never really intended to use my still camera for filming anything, but decided to try it out, and it's fun to do. I do like the last sequence. I almost twisted my neck (

) panning and tracking the Angels passing over me. This year I hope to take a camcorder and a tripod along, if the Blue Angles do again perform -- they usually do.
