Fun article for a Sunday morning read and look back. Lots has changed in top selling vehicles, since many of us graduated high school.

When I was in high school, liked many cars. But a car that always caught my eye was a late 1970s Pontiac Grand Prix with t-tops.

Yearning for yesteryear.

1978 Olds Cutlass
1979 Olds Cutlass
1980 Olds Cutlass
1981 Olds Cutlass
1982 Ford Escort
1983 Olds Cutlass
1984 Chevy Cavalier
1985 Chevy Cavalier
1986 Chevy Celebrity
1987 Ford Escort
1988 Ford Escort
1989 Honda Accord
1990 Honda Accord
1991 Honda Accord
1992 Ford Taurus

My father bought my mom a 1972 VW Super Beetle which she later gave it to me. Drove it all the way in HS until I graduated from college in 1978. I gave that Beetle to my kid brother which he sold after he graduated college. ;)

The list doesn't go back far enough for me. I checked, and was surprised to find the new Buick Riviera was the best selling car in the U.S. the year I graduated high school.

Yup, Oldsmobile finally had the #1 selling car in the USA and GM wouldn't let Lansing keep the RWD platform.
All was going to FWD.
A little flexibility could've enriched car manufacturing of this country.
The irony.

Buick Riviera are awesome. I was surprised it was the number one seller only because it was a higher priced coupe.

There were several cars that were more expensive than the Riviera that year. The Lincoln Continental, various Thunderbird models, I think the Avanti ... but you're right, the Riviera was surprising.

They had overlap between the FWD A-bodies and RWD G-bodies through most of the 80s. If you counted all the GM makes and drive styles they still sold a bazillion.

What got me was when the flagship Cutlass Supreme went FWD in 1988 it had the dopey Chevy 2.8 V6 while the lesser Ciera got a 3.1, 3.3, or 3.8.

PERSONAL NOTE: As stated, the Rivieras were higher priced AND a coupe.
Me? Even though the '66 enjoyed classicism due to those "GM Motorama special", ribbed retractable headlight covers, I always felt Rivieras had a touch of overfed goshness. The successful man's wife's car.
The year Buick included that hideously pointed back bumper, the "personal luxury" segment took a hit.
However, a coworker had a lovely blue example of the final year Rivera which I thought was truly elegant for what it was.
That was a cleanly finished car.

Here it is....1948

The best-selling American car in 1948 was the Ford F-Series pickup truck, which was first introduced that year. The F-Series has remained a top-selling vehicle in the United States for decades:

Anybody remember when it was common to get a carb and valve job? I remember my dad in the early fifties getting one done on a Studebaker.

When the paint was new on one of these beauties.
