Well it finally happened. My son sold the Ranger last night for $900. It had 354K with the engine running as well as when I bought it 19 years ago. The valve covers were never removed and the engine used no more oil than when I bought it so many years ago. OCI was always 10-14K. The body was getting bad, and it had other issues as well, but she still ran great. He bought a 97 Expy with the 4.6 2 wheel drive. It has 167K but is very clean inside and out. The engine appears the be clean as well and it runs fine. He said the first order of business will be changing to M1 5-30. We will all miss the old truck, as it is like one of the family.

I would have kept it just for the fact that it had that many miles on it. Personally, I would need to know how far it could have gone...

Sad day!

What was the guy going to do with the Ranger? Put it on the road? I have a hard time convincing myself that even a car with 150K miles, 240K kilometers, still could have lots of useful life...

The Ranger actually had 354K miles or about 570K KMs. Yes, the new owner is going to use the truck as a work truck as my son did for several years. As I already said, this Ranger still runs very good. Even with the cold mornings we have had this winter, the engine fires right up with no unusual engine noise.

As I said the valve covers were never removed. Also no rear end work has never been done to it, with two M1 75-90 gear oil changes. One fuel pump was replaced, and two clutch rebuilds were needed to replace the hyd. clutch slave cylinders. One radiator. one water pump, one alternator, and one starter. A few brake jobs and only one set of shocks. And one radiator fan. Master cyl was original, but we always did the turkey baster fluid draw at ever oil change.

Tig1,
Congradulations! I love vehicles like this. This is what MFG's hate to hear. Oh yeah, it's something the MFG's want to used in their adds but don't really like the fact that we are running their vehicles into the ground for 20 years w/o buying another. Yeah, I know, many of us have several other vehicles as well.

I have had a few cars that did this. 16, 17 & 18 yrs. 200K-340K. Love it! It's all of the rust from the winter salt that we have to deal with(more so than failed parts) when trying to run the vehicle for that long.

My largest cost of rotted parts is ususlly:
Exhaust parts
Fuel, brake, P/S lines
Brake Rotors.
And then the body parts start to rust away along with the frame and other structural parts. Darn Salt!

Awesome tig1!

Did your son tell the new owner what to run in it for oil?

Yes he did. From the start I kept records of every oil change, and every part that was replaced. My son kept up with the records as well, so when he sold it he showed the new owner all the records dating back to 91. Even though the body was showing some rust, the records helped to sell the vehicle. M1 was listed for the OCs. I believe there were 4-5 pages. He got $900 for the truck.

Sorry to hear that the Ranger is gone, but I'm sure your son will like his new ride.

I don't think I could bring myself to sell a vehicle after having it so long...I'm sure it was tough to let it go.

When I owned the truck(up to 190K) I did 10K OCIs with M1 10-30. Since I gave it to my son he did anywhere from 10-14K OCIs, with M1 10-30 and some changes with M1 5-30HM. As for oil filters, mostly M1 and MC were used.
