The 5/40 oils

We have all compared the 0/40 to 5w40 and hype that 0/40 is better. I love the 40s for the elevated ZDDP levels. My 2 vehicles
2015 Acura MDX, J35, and 2024 Ram 1500 V6. The MDX gets Mobil 1 0w40. I’m going to try the Mobil 1 ESP 0w30. She gets her oil/filter l changed every 3k

The Ram is brand new, it’s been getting oil/filter changes every 750 miles during this break in period. Currently she has 2200 miles. I’ll continue to do this, for the 1st 5k miles. Cost is 40 bucks with w Mobil 1 filter She’s currently getting Quaker State Euro 5w40.

The first oil change done on the ram at 130 miles, she received Mobil 1 0w40. I did this for the first 2 changes. I’m on the third one now with the QS

Ok let’s get to my point. I’ve noticed looking at the spec sheets. All the 5w40 seem to be 13,2 ish at 100c. When you look at the 0/40 @100c is higher.

Why is this? And why does the blends of the base oil different? The truck mpg is slightly better and runs different with the 5w40. Or this bc the engine is freeing up as we move through the break in? Once I get to 5k mark, it will continue to get 3k OCI. Oil is cheap when done yourself, I plan on keeping it longer than 20 years since I purchased it brand new. I also desire to have a HTHS >3.5 which is the euro oils for the most part.

From what I understand it's a matter of cost which varies by base oil type (Gr2+, Gr3, Gr3+, PAO) as well as the choice and amount of Gr5, viscosity index improver and/or pour point depressants.

Your MPG's will increase as the engine wears in.

I am not sure how you got to that conclusion? Mobil 1 0W40 is premier product for Mobil 1, but for Pennzoil, that is Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40, as well as for Motul, X-Cess 5W40 GEN2. It is choice by blender, not grade per se.
The KV100 of 0W40 oils (some of them) went up with API SP introduction.

Looking on the API EOLCS there are quite a few but not many available here. Amsoil, Liqui Moly and Motul are most notable.

Why anyone would care is another question, but that's a side issue.

Castrol 5W40.
Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40
Motul 5W40 GEN2
Valvoline Euro 5W40
etc, etc.

My question has always been, why pay for more winter grade/cold start performance than you need?
Delvac 1300 15w40 and 10w30 both meet API CK-4/SP.
Go ahead and blend the two if you're looking for a specific HTHS.

Good old 10w40 Castrol GTX API SP is working fine in my 2022 3.6L Acadia. And the price is right.
IMO, the base oil composition is just a delivery system and medium for the additive package.

There are quite a few oils from Mobil 1 that have a HTHS Number of 3.5

Some restrictions apply, like cost of the ingredients, selling price and marketability.
Typically the finished product is blended to a performance standard, not a price point.

I love my truck. Actually my first full size. My first truck was a 2002 Toy Tacoma, 5sp manual, single cab rwd. Had kids, it had to go.

I made a general statement that Synthetic 0-40 oils tend to have more Grp 5 or 5 base oils than the 5-40's which are mainly Grp 3 base oils. The 0-40 spread seems to require more than Grp 3 base oils. I didn't mention any brands.

You should mention brand and type specifically when you claim the above.
I do know there exist some 0W-40 with an 'increased' (whatever it means)
content of PAO (group 4), but I'd say it's the minority. The vast majority of
0W-40 is mainly based on group 3 including GTL.
Not to forget, I don't know any single PCMO (regardless of their viscosity
grade) with a major group 5 content. For a reason.
Just do a google and/or forum search for 'aniline point' along with 'engine
oil'. It has a much to do with seal compatibility and miscibility with additives.
You might hopefully understand, all engine (and transmission) oils require
the use of several different base oils. In simple words, both group 3 and 4
need some group 1/2 and/or group 5 for some compensation.
